Texas town lays off its police department

Welcome to the libertarian paradise!

The TX town of Alto has furloughed its entire police force (5 people) for six months to save money. They are kinda hoping the county sheriff's department, which is also facing drastic budget cuts, will take up the slack.

Good time to be selling grow lights and whatever hardware they use in meth labs. And ammo.

The next town over from me has worked out a deal with the county police department. They removed their police force and are now under the protection of the county police. About 1/2 of the original officers were retained, the rest primarily retired after many years of service. This allows the County to get more Federal cash to cover their expenses due to 'more officers' being on the streets.

Public safety was long exempted from many of the cuts and furloughs that affected other public employees, but that is changing even in the red county where I work. The Board of Supervisors is making position and benefit cuts in the Sheriff's department in addition to the DA and County Fire offices, bitter medicine for law-and-order Republican politicians. The town where I live contracts with the county sheriff for police services and Cal Fire provides fire protection services under contract with the county.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if it turns out that this has been solicited by the private prison/security industry, like so many decisions of this sort-particularly in California. There was a great NPR story about this trends a while back. I think I posted it...

I read someplace that Mesa, AZ is contracting out police detective work to save money. Next they'll be bringing back Sherlock Holmes; Hercule Poirot; and Miss Marple to solve crimes free of charge.

Brrr, that's ugly.
Imagine the new attitude. I think a new form of crime would then be invented. Like being arrested by a melitia. You'd then be brought to a disclosed location, interogated, stripped, raped and mutilated. No woman would be safe and my guess would be job openings for Republican's eventually creating the end of democracy as we know it.

dude, you should never ball your tires.
Yeah, you've got to tread lightly. I mean, we all want to plug them, don't we? But they are under a lot of pressure, and once you get them rolling, you may have an explosive situation on your hands...and wow do they blow. Also, their nuts and ours are incompatible. :pirate:

Xela might not be too far off with RoboCop and the private-for-profit contractor OCP (Omni Consumer Products) or the TV series The Cape with the privatized police working for ARK.
