"...He was a jazz musician and composer, who played flute and organ on a limited-release CD performed with the Morpheus Quintet and featuring his own compositions, "The Kevorkian Suite: A Very Still Life."

And, more in keeping with his Dr. Death image, he was an oil painter of surrealistic, often gruesome, canvases depicting medical conditions and social commentary -- paintings of what Vanity Fair writer Jack Lessenberry described as "such merry scenes as a child eating the flesh off a decomposing corpse and Santa crushing a baby in a manger."

His first publicized 'patient' was a friend of my family. I support choice in all realms...but this guy still gave me the creeps.

I respect him for all he did in advancing the cause of assisted suicide, though I didn't always agree with his methods. Religion had a big part in laws against assisted suicide like abortion and Kevorkian came into it as a physician talking about real people who had terminal illnesses and wanted peace.

Best comment I saw: Dr. Jack Kevorkian: 0 points, 0 rebounds, 130 assists.

I used to be somewhat but vaguely against him. After my father picked up a terminal nervous system disease that puts him in unimaginable pain every second of every day (on the new style pain system, his average pain is higher than child birth), I understood what could drive a person to help people like that.

Precisely. Watch someone die of cancer once and you will be just fine with Dr. Jack.

I think he was a pretty stand-up guy, but he was an idiot for representing himself during his murder trial.

John Brown is an apt comparison. Not because lifelong chattel slavery is equivalent to outlawing euthanasia, but because Kevorkian was also crazy as cat shit, while on the issue for which he advocated he was basically right.
