Fla drug screens for welfare

Saying it is "unfair for Florida taxpayers to subsidize drug addiction," Gov. Rick Scott on Tuesday signed legislation requiring adults applying for welfare assistance to undergo drug screening.

"It's the right thing for taxpayers," Scott said after signing the measure. "It's the right thing for citizens of this state that need public assistance. We don't want to waste tax dollars. And also, we want to give people an incentive to not use drugs."

Under the law, which takes effect on July 1, the Florida Department of Children and Family Services will be required to conduct the drug tests on adults applying to the federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program. The aid recipients would be responsible for the cost of the screening, which they would recoup in their assistance if they qualify. Those who fail the required drug testing may designate another individual to receive the benefits on behalf of their children.

I agree but at the same time, the dope addicts aren't really the main problem with welfare, the main problem is the ones who, while being drug dealers, and have no reportable income still get welfare. After that you have the institutionalized welfare famlies who've been on welfare and pretty much subsist on it for generations without ever even trying to get a job, or at lest a legal one. ..... then you have the other 90% of people on welfare who just had life hand them a sack of burning shit.

I agree we need to reform welfare to get people off of it that really don't need it, that are just abusing the system. but every solution I've come up with is objectionable for one reason or another. Course, we could get rid of welfare altogether and just implement socialism. Bam problem solved. but no, the capitalists want their saftey net to keep the poorest of the poor from rising up against them.
If I hear "crony" capitalism one more time I'm going to be ill. Capitalism is capitalism, dog eats dog and one dog ends up on top, and he defends that place with all the power he's accumulated.

In principle, I agree with this measure. Welfare checks should go towards food for children, not for drugs. But again, here are at least one problem and that is drug testing without reasonable suspicion. I'm concerned that this can easily lead to other legislatures for example, police can enter any house with a satellite dish on it's roof to check if the homeowner is actually using it to watch Al-Jazeera... or something like that.

Dont want to be drug tested? Dont apply to collect welfare!!
I agree, but this is that old issue of private companies vs government. Private companies can do pretty much whatever they want (they don't need legislature to approve) but government is something different.

I'm not trying to ignite a fire, but I will like to know how do you guys think about this from the legal point as well as in comparison with other legislatures being created in last few months by the republican governors?

I guess I don't totally disagree with the law, but I just hope children don't suffer even more because their mom or dad is a drug addict.
And let me tell you somethin' bout the whole "an ant can lift a hundred times its weight" buisness, it's a myth, how much do you think an ant actually weighs--like nothin, what's nothin times a hundred....IT"S NOTHING!

The children suffer with or without welfare when their parents are addicts.

I work with families that include children, their parents, their grandparents, and their greatgrandparents! Who suffered through enabling with welfare? Every last one of them.

So what about cigarettes? Alcohol? Junk food? Would it be OK to screen for those as well? I wouldn't want welfare checks subsidizing people's addictions of any kind.

If he was serious about saving taxpayers money, he'd legalize and tax all those drugs he's worried about. It'd create billions of dollars in new revenue and savings.

Do the bankers who launder drug money down there have to be tested? Probably not, and they get taxpayer money at 0% interest and then charge everyone else 20% for it. He's just another idealogical con artist.
