DuckyChan came shooting with me again

1
Time for another significant other range report! I brought out the AR-15. She shot it a few times but her arm was already sore from another day so she fired a decent 3 shot group then I switched over to the .22lr conversion. Well it turns out that a lefty should not shoot this particular kit. She was getting hit in the face with hot propellant and spent casings. In the end she still said she had a good time. She is also a better shot than me due to the Sergent Major in JROTC ingraining shooting fundamentals into her. She wants a Ruger 10/22 to call her own now! After my computer is built that will be my next gun purchase.

Any other lefties have problems with gun made for right handed people? I don't want to buy the 10/22 and find out that she will get smacked in the face with spent casings.

The ar57 upper ejects through the bottom. The 10/22 throws pretty far never heard Lefties complain.

Stag Arms make a whole line of left-handed ARs. The whole AK genre is more friendly to lefties than it is to righties, with the exception of a few after market add-ons like the Lightning Bolt. Charter Arms makes a fully left-handed revolver, but aside from 1800's style single actions, that's the only revolver I know of that is a lefty by design. There are a number of pistols that are made that are fully ambidextrous, and most manufacturers have at least one offering. So to answer your question, yes, it is a common issue for lefties to need modifications to certain platforms their ease of use. Gas and powder blow back can be a very real issue with certain guns.

Here is a link to a thread on another forum, where a thoughtful lefty tried to compile a useful list:

What style of AR upper do you have? I think that the A1 style didn't have a brass deflector yet, but the later models did and they are pretty effective. I've only fired a 10/22 maybe twice in my life, and I don't recall if I had issues with gases/powder, but I have heard other lefties make that complaint.

P.S. I've NEVER had a problem with AKs blowing back at me! an AK74 style rifle is cheaper to acquire, has a softer recoil, and has far cheaper ammo than an AR in 5.56.

She didn't fire a whole lot of .223 but I think there where no problems. There where problems with the conversion kit. I have an M4 style upper with brass deflector. The thing is that the brass didn't come in at an angle that would hit the deflector. It would travel right past it.

I also told her about a left handed AR-15. She told me the more I talk about it, the less she wants to go shooting again. She wants a 10/22 and that is that so I dropped the subject. I just don't think she is interested in full sized rife ammunition.

Okay to explain why I asked him to drop the subject.

Metal talks about guns. A lot. Most days that's the major topic of conversation, unless something rage inducing came up on the Daily Kos.

While I am slowly gaining interest in the activity, I am still easily burnt out on the subject. It is easy to just want to not do it, and not talk about it anymore, since that has been the main source of conversation for the past year and a half.

When the Harry Potter books were super popular, I avoided them because I got burnt out on the subject before I ever even picked up the book. I've read all seven now that everyone has moved onto freaking out about Twilight.

For me, topic interest reaches maximum and then I need to decompress and just...not hear about it for a while.

That being said, I did have lots of fun. The hot unburned propellant in the face was not good, and I mostly stopped shooting because it started hitting the same previously burnt spots over again, and that shit hurts.

I slept on my arm funny last night so with the .223 rounds, it was hitting the exact same sore muscle and I did not find that enjoyable. I think I'll try it again another time when I haven't slept in some fucked up yoga like pose.

I didn't try his Glock because I find the backstrap too big for my hand (Just...pretend all the girth jokes were made and move on.). I am not the biggest person in the world, and I have rather tiny hands.

And then he fed me, which is always the end of a good trip.

+1 on the AK. I'm a lefty as well. I'd love to have a Bulgy Krink. My Polish M60 is a lot of fun and very comfortable. My wife and son like it too. The same gun with a lighter recoil would be the right choice for them. The 10/22 is fun for plinking but without something a little more powerful I don't get my fill. Kind of like hotsauce. Nothing like Dave's Insanity to top it off.

Shooting can be quite fun if you don't have hot gas and brass bouncing off your face. Also a gun doesn't always have to be semi auto to be fun either. I've had a lot of fun shooting single shots and muzzle loaders.

Just a thought, but has DC ever tried shooting a long gun right-handed? What's her eye dominance?

A 10/22 with a pistol grip stock and a forward vertical grip might make a good crossover trainer, since the hand position is about the same for both hands.

Love the honest opinion.

My wife sometimes gets burned out about my guntalk, and I've slowly tried to learn her signs. No hard feelings. I love her even more just for putting up with me, and well, we do have some other things in common.

I've found out that a good meal after a shooting session helps :) That, and drinks of course. Lotsa drinks.

From your soreness and inhalation I would say you are showing good form.

I know of a left handed biathlon rifle for sale. You would enjoy it.
