Many names are derived from different words that have some meanings, or represent some human activity (Smith, Taylor, Peace...). His name is popular one in Serbia and it's derived from word WAR.

I understand his son's name is Darko. Ratko and Darko.....you can't make this stuff up!!

Darko - the name comes from word "gift". Mladic had a daughter. She might have been older child so when son was born, then must felt as if they received a gift. Coincidentally, Mladic's daughter committed a suicide during the war in Bosnia. People say she did it because she couldn't live with the shame that he was her father. Apparently, her death didn't upset him greatly.
