Wow, this really exists; pinch me because I must be dreaming.
I am a nubie to the forum and the whole world of firearms. My story may be fairly common, raised by a liberal, ex-hippie, single mom who absolutely hated firearms. Growing up I was (and still am) a military history buff who loves documentaries on, well, war stuff. I can debate the argument over L1A1 vs. FN FALs in the Falklands or why the SG-44 (MP-43) is the father of the modern assault rifle rather than the M1 carbine all day long.
I don’t know if it’s just a guy thing, but no matter how much I was told guns were dangerous tools of the military industrial complex and that I should reject them with the same vigor I reject patriarchy, racism, fascism and religious dogma…but guns are just so cool! So now that I am all grown up with a family of my own I am thinking of getting into collecting and shooting. I would like to provide my children with a basic knowledge of firearms because it seems like something all Americans should have considering how prevalent firearms are in our society, and again they are just so cool!
So here I am, I have lurked around other firearms related sites and they downright scare me. Seems like there is this unstated rule that goes something like this:
Interest in guns = Christian fundamentalist = distain for government = Obama is a Fascist/Socialist (your choice)
How does that work? I just would like to go shoot targets with my son and own a part of history (like an M1 Garand!). All of a sudden I am asked to question Obama’s citizenship…WTF does that have to do with debating Hi-Power vs. Glock?
Anyway, happy to have found this forum.

3Welcome!
I myself grew up in a place where guns were considered BAD BAD BAD! You can recover from such abuse.
My thoughts are that you should start with a .22 of some sort to get your feet wet. But that's just me.

7Don't listen to JudgePacker.
You should definitely start with a hard kicking military caliber, .30-06 or 7.62x54R should suffice. Definitely let your kid shoot it first. If you don't he'll turn out to be a liberal wussy.

8I have a lot of friends in Seattle and like what I've heard about it as far as quality of life is concerned (I live in the armpit of conservative bible belt) but I don't know how would I handle rain and winter.
As far as guns go, be careful. They quickly multiply.
I posted few days ago a link to Bud's Gunshop that has pretty neat deal, EAA Witness (full size) in 9mm and conversion kit for .22lr for $397.00. This might be a great deal for a newbie such as yourself. Here's link: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/prod ... s_id/76085

14My mom tried to get me to go veggie for years and it never took, now she is trying with my kids. Weird, I think telling my mom that I like guns would be like somone telling their conservitive parents that they were gay. I bet some of the dialog would even be the same:
Me: "Mom, didn't you see the signs? all the books, the movies?"
Mom: "Yes son but I thought it was just a phase, somthing you would grow out of"
Mom: "You told me all those books belonged to your Freind Carl"
Mom: "I guess I saw the signs, I just didn't want to believe that it was true"
P.S. I am NOT making light of anyone comming out to their parents.

That is what makes this forum interesting it isn't full of blue-collar, impotent, middle-aged white men. Which is the vibe I get on many forums.

16Oh and don't tell your anti-gun mom that you like or have firearms... it just opens a can of worms that would be best remain closed. I should have listened to my dad more on such matters.

17I would look into buy Hi-Points. New in the box for around $185.00. Very reliable with a lifetime warranty which transfers to whom ever owns the gun.

18Very true. I am a BIG fan of the 995TS carbine in 9mm. This thing is a lot more gun than I thought it would be for roughly $250. Very intuitive and easy to shoot out to 100yds.SamuraiCowboy wrote:I would look into buy Hi-Points. New in the box for around $185.00. 19Welcome!
Your interests and path to this forum ring familiar to many here. I was struck by your statement that you want your children to learn the basics of firearms. That was part of my motivation when I starting acquiring firearms well into adulthood.
Your interest in historic and military firearms is shared by many here, and I can see steering you toward a surplus M1 Garand at some point. But I'd suggest starting with something simple, cheap, and easy to shoot like the aforementioned 10/22.

You are safe to discuss you gun fetish here....sinner
Seriously, welcome aboard. We have the usual gun discussion about recoil, ballistics, etc... and the typical arguments, but we also have great discussions about other things not gun related.
enjoy.

21One advantage to the 10/22 is the amount of aftermarket modifications that are available for it. Someone here has an awesome mod that makes their 10/22 look like an old M1 carbine. Maybe they'll be nice e4nough to drop off a pic?
