The article didn't go into how you hunt them, so I'm curious.

How do you shoot a squirrel without destroying all the meat? .22 and try for a head shot? #8 birdshot? Something else?

My grandfather talked about "barking" them. Shoot just under them at the limb and the concussion would knock them out and they would fall.

When I was 14 or so I blew a squirrels head clean off with my brand new rem 1100 12ga and a rem slugger deer slug. That poor fucking bastard ran all the way down a 70 or 80' tree, another 50 on the ground and finally bit the dust. Feel bad now. Squirrels are tough.
Best is a 22cal pellet gun. A rifle goes to far and to shoot squirrels you usually have to point up.

Unless they are in very tall trees or skittish(heavily hunted) i would use .22 shorts or a 410 or 20g with #4 or 6 shot at smallest. They are tough little bastards(until they have been in the crock pot for a couple hours). Never much liked fried squirrel (or rabbit for that matter). Stewed with dumplings, however, is a completely different story.

Corn-fed fox squirrels will be dying this fall because of this post. It has been years...

Simmer says they taste like chicken. Or maybe he means they fly like chickens.

I actually feed the ones around here. There are 2 or 3 tribes that come around a few times a day and I feed them saltines. The run up to me now and will take crackers out of my hands. They're interesting to watch and I've noticed they are most fascinating when I should be cranking out reports.
