The article didn't go into how you hunt them, so I'm curious.Simmer down wrote:http://eatocracy.cnn.com/2011/05/20/giv ... l-a-whirl/

My grandfather talked about "barking" them. Shoot just under them at the limb and the concussion would knock them out and they would fall.larrymod wrote:The article didn't go into how you hunt them, so I'm curious.Simmer down wrote:http://eatocracy.cnn.com/2011/05/20/giv ... l-a-whirl/

How do you shoot a squirrel without destroying all the meat? .22 and try for a head shot? #8 birdshot? Something else?
When I was 14 or so I blew a squirrels head clean off with my brand new rem 1100 12ga and a rem slugger deer slug. That poor fucking bastard ran all the way down a 70 or 80' tree, another 50 on the ground and finally bit the dust. Feel bad now. Squirrels are tough.Simmer down wrote:My grandfather talked about "barking" them. They are tough little bastards(until they have been in the crock pot for a couple hours). Never much liked fried squirrel (or rabbit for that matter). Stewed with dumplings, however, is a completely different story.
Corn-fed fox squirrels will be dying this fall because of this post. It has been years...

I'll come shoot a bunch for you and you can eat your fill.
There's alot more to huntin' than pullin' the trigger, boy.Paladin wrote:goosekiller wrote:Unless they are in very tall trees or skittish(heavily hunted) i would use .22 shorts or a 410 or 20g with #4 or 6 shot at smallest.
