I would like to think that Camping will be prosecuted, that there will be evidence enough that a DA somewhere will have the courage to bring charges.

I said I would like to think, which implies that I don't currently think, that there is a DA out there with that kind of courage.

Had Camping been a snake oil salesman, or promising to repave a driveway or two and skipping off with the money, sure-no problem.

But Harold used religion as his burglary tool, his weapon. The separation of Church and State is subject to a very broad interpretation for the likes of Camping and his ilk.

I hope, deep down, that I am wrong.

So far I've got one confirmed suicide, one attempt, and two attempted murders.

Soooo 1 death so far. Told ya it'd be low. Do we count the attempts?
I think it depends on the nature of attempt. Tried to O.D. with a double dose of tylenol followed by a Mike's Hard Lemonade...nah, not countable. Slipped when the trigger was pulled, only blew out your tongue, palate, and nasal/sinus cavities, maybe an eye, but no brain...I think that should count as a good faith effort.

Well I have lived through Jones town and a few others, I've seen the mass weddings of the moonies and even going back to the manson family shit, even met a totally insane bitch that joined his family after he went to prison. I think I'll with hold my true feelings about people so flawed they will take the word of charletons so seriously.

I think attempts count. I think there will be more in the next week or so.

I'm getting people in who are questioning their beliefs. They felt so strongly about the religious basis for their thoughts they start to question other beliefs. Many can't separate the different things going on so they assume the world must be going mad.

To get a fix on the percentage of folks who try to kill themselves, we need to establish a number of adherents. This link has the group saying they hoped that 200 million faithful would get raptured:

No way in hell are there 200 million of these idiots, right? Right? Please tell me they're overestimating.

No, they were hoping to rapture all the christians, and that's not really an overestimation.

Census doesn't collect religion data, but a random dial study in 08 that called 50 thousand some people, asked for their own personally chosen affiliation without providing a list or suggestions, and came up with a number of total adult christians of 173,402,000.

Add in the children and it's easy to come up with 200 mill possible raptures. So the overestimation isn't of christians, but of christians devout enough to become unhinged in the time around a supposed armageddon event.

There are more than 173 million Christians. Registered, baptised Catholics number over 1 billion (not practicing mind you). Most do not (none should) believe in the Rapture. It is not in our dogma. Anyway, the number was just something they pulled out of their ass, I do not recall but I think it was like 3% of the world population or of Christians. It was just as faulty as anything else that fool was doing.
