Just stumbled onto this site that allows you to make your own targets: http://www.mindflow.com.au/targets/index.php

It gives you lots of options and lets you download a PDF for future use. I thought it was pretty snazzy.

That one is cool. I've run across a few more sites that have pdf targets you can print too:

After you get your 45 and start reloading in ernest for it you might try a 5 gallon bucket filled with sand at 100 yds at your buddies place. You'll be surprised how easy you can lob those 230 gr. pumpkins into one, just like walking in mortar rounds.

Shooting a 1911 at 100 yards? Now I know you are crazy. :)

That would be a pretty fun challenge I think. I'll have to find 100 yards of space out there first.

I look forward to collecting milk jugs, pop bottles and the like to use for targets. Wish the gun clubs would let us use more than just paper targets.

I know you have posted shooting at a friends rural property and if there is a place to shoot at long range the way to do it is to sit on the ground with your back against a tree and your knees up and using a very tight 2 handed hold with your wrists resting on your knees aim dead on center at the target. Those big slugs will throw up a lot of dirt on impact and you estimate the drop and then aim at something above the target check the amount of drop and adjust accordingly. Its a good test of the real accuracy of your reloaded ammo and a very good way to develop good trigger control and most of all fun. If I remember correctly there is about 12 feet of drop at that range with 230 gr. ball with 5 grs. of old bullseye.

Just head over to the good folks at zombiehunters.org. Print out a set of nifty Zed silhouettes and you're ready to rock!

Same at the clubs where I shoot, but I can't blame them. Glass makes a mess of the range fast, metal can be a ricochet hazard.

Balloons (or exam glove chickens) make decent reactive targets that should be unobjectionable anywhere.

We can use balloons on the black powder range where I shoot, but nowhere else.

Years ago when we lived on a small farm my wife and I had 3 freezers to keep the meat and produce in that we raised. By the first of july we would start making blocks of ice with milk cartons to take up space in the freezers. By the first of september we would shoot the ice they make very dramatic targets.

technically, you shouldn't use objects made of glass because 1) glass doesn't biodegrade 2) glass can cause richochet and 3) broken glass can cause injury to others. unless you're helping with the cleaning duties, i'd say you have no business shooting at glass targets. plastic jugs filled with liquid should be ok but I don't know about metal targets. another way to put this into context would be, imagine if it was your personal property being used. would you want broken glass shot up on your land?

You must be pretty old to think that "pop bottles" are still made of glass...

It's okay, I still remember buying Mountain Dew in the glass quart bottles.

I was talking about the 1 and 2 liter plastic pop bottles.

And I shoot on my buddies farm and always clean up after myself.

Some of the "other" responses are indeed interesting. Two are interesting to me:

Ok, this is the FINAL word on this subject "Soda" is club soda, add a sweetener and it becomes a "Soft Drink", "Tonic" contains quinine, "Soda-Pop" is what northern hicks use and shorten to "Pop" which is someone's father and therefore clearly unacceptable. Colas are cola-flavored SOFT DRINKS and are in the civilized world referred to as COKE since Coca-Cola is the first, largest and most enjoyable drink ever produced. In our capitalist culture the originator gets the credit. So go Xerox some paper and put up some Sheetrock while you read this on your PC. Also, as the chart clearly indicates, the most educated and civilized parts of our country (the East and West Coasts) clearly refer to it as Coke. I grew up in south east Florida (the only civilized part of Florida as well as a bigger mixing pot than NY city or the whole of California) and we ask for Coke. What kind of coke? Hmm..I'll have a Sprite, or maybe a Pepsi (if you prefer that ilk, but you still ask for COKE first). The ONLY exception is if you want a Root Beer or and Orange Soda, in which case you ask by brand name "I would like a Sunkist." or "One A&W root beer please." This is clearly the educated way of ordering a SOFT DRINK and it will get you laid too.
This is exactly the way I learned it.

One other one that I saw was one I also heard a lot growing up:
co-cola

So am I reading that map right in the south they call all "soda pop" coke? Where I come from we only call coke coke. Although there was a time in my very distant and hazy past that we called coke thinking mans dristan. But like I say thats a time period thats kind of hazy to me and I might be wrong there.

Do you only call band-aid brand bandages 'bandaids'? Only Kleenex brand tissues, 'kleenex'? Scotch tape? thermos? yo-yo? frisbee? velcro? jell-o? q-tips? styrofoam? chapstick? hell.... even aspirin (a trademarked name of Bayer at one point).

So yeah, we use a genericized brand name.

Now then, let me repaste the explanation from above as to why its a fine choice:
