Stumped me there ABN, most guns that will shoot a mile out will over penetrate like crazy, so LEGAL guns I'm gunna have to get back with you..... but THV ammunition is a good start. Not legal.
I would've accepted an AR with a spare .338 Lapua upper.

a good solution but I'm still not really all that comfortable telling people to use an ar for home defense. Over penetration is a huge problem inside your own house.... where there are you know, your wife and kids. Also .338 is a bit excessive. .308 will get the job done better for most civillians. Your going to shoot better with more practice and more is not what you get a $5 a round. I will always reccomend .308 winchester over .338 lapua to anyone who's not loaded..... or doesn't get their ammo from uncle sam.

Whoda whata? .45 has alot less felt recoil than a 9mm due to the higher velocity of the 9mm.

Ya know ABN, I always thought so too...or rather, that the .45 was more of a push instead of a snap. Nice to have some validation, thanks.
actually what matters is momentum for every reaction there is an opposite reaction... that. The big difference comes in pistol size. if your shooting a big honkin gun, of course your going to feel a lot less recoil.
(oh and heres a big secret, the +p rating 9mms are actually more powerful than some .45acps, the .45 is just bigger, so it transferrs energy more efficiently, but with hollowpoints..... the differences start to turn into blurry shades of gray. Basically, 9mm is smaller but has the same energy. Don't tell my cousin though, he believes the .45 is gods gift to the world through america.)

Why does BO want my guns?
Genderally no, Steel used in bullets is usually a soft steel, where as a barrel is usually made out of hard steel. Be careful if your gun is old or just plain low quality however.
also BO does not want to take your guns, it'd be political suicide.

No problem! A lot of people think that because it's a .45 it must have more kick than a 9mm simply because it's bigger, especially if they've shot a .40 before. Both of which shoot at higher velocities than the American classic. Maybe it's just perceived, all I know is that I've noticed rounds that "snap" instead of "woomp" seem to have more recoil.
Oh! That gave me another question
Is it true that you can switch the 9mm barrel in a glock 17 to make it a .40 or .357 sig?

It is all percieved, the "american Classic" is just that. A classic. it's a good round but so is the 9mm both are very close in power. Just in different ways. 9mm is smaller and more concealable usually, .45 generally "punches" harder.
on the Glocks conversion kits abound yes. You can even make your glock 17 fire .22lr too.
also on the subject of kick. .45's they have the perception of being more of a kick. Which can actually make them kick more, at least in your mind.

It's okay neo, as my quantum mechanics professor once said: there are no stupid questions.... wait yes, there are some stupid questions.
course any open ended question like that has no real answer, with a wide variety of uses, you can't say a Berretta is really any better than a comparable glock or 1911 clone. They all have their advantages and weaknesses. And without a specific purpose in mind, open ended "which is better" questions, really are stupid questions. But you never call them out for being stupid questions.

Umm, all good but the last bit about Glocks. A .40 can be converted to .357sig or 9mm easily, BUT a 9mm frame is not the same as the .40 frame and consequently cannot handle the forces involved in the heavier cartridges. A G22 can be converted to 9mm, but a G17 can't be converted to .40.

Design of a weapon has ALOT to deal with recoil. I've found the recoil on a PA-63 with a heavy spring in 9mm Mak to be hideous on my hand while a .45 from a Hi-Point pistol is nearly enjoyable due to the heavy Zinc/alloy slide. Recoil *is* truly a matter of personal perception and what weapon fits you better.

Actually .40 and 9mm Glock frames are same, except the hole for a barrel on the slide (it's bigger on G22 and G23) and slightly different position of ejector. I had G23 that I bought Lone Wolf 9mm conversion barrel and 9mm magazines and it worked excellent. It actually worked better and was more accurate than original .40. I didn't have to do anything with the ejector or spring, just swap barrel and magazines and it worked. However, I'm not crazy about Glocks. I sold all of it and bought CZ P-07 Duty and I'm happy. Rule of a thumb is - you can always (provided somebody is manufacturing it) convert from larger to smaller caliber, but not the other way around.

if I could ONLY have one automatic, it would be a glock. Damn things are nearly unstoppable. the local police force shows the new recruits why they use glocks and not the military issue M9, by having one in a bucket of sand, pulling it out and firing it.

I take issue with the title of that piece. There is nothing "vulgar" about those particular guns, or guns in general for that matter, though that is what that article was implying.

Yeah, my J-frame shooting +P .38 is WAY more painful than shooting my compact 9mm shooting NATO (high-pressure) rounds.

smaller guns with the same loadings will generally have more recoil. area of the back of the gun actually plays a role as well. smaller area, more pressure on your hand, the more its going to hurt.
