There are so many angles to look at this:
Kissing up to 2012 rep voters
Mr Centerline Walker
Not really hard Left as left-ish-right
Kicking the mid-east oil habit
Last, I think, helping the US economy

The hard part of my heart says "Let them eat spilled oil for once"
I am an imperfect being. I accept this and mitigate.

Caving to uneducated hillbilly and capitalist-driven Republican pressure sounds more like it. The US still pays some of the lowest prices for fuel in North American and Europe, but jimmy-joe-bobby is irate that his 12mpg mega-SUV now costs him more to fill up. But, instead of looking towards getting a more efficient truck or actually deciding if he needs a V10 gasoline driven quad cab to drive his one kid to hockey practice, it's easier to blame the "Liberals" and their sissy hybrids and demand the gubment do something about it.
It's all a stopgap at best. I honestly think the oil industry has calcuated that we may of hit peak oil before we were ready to accept it, and slowly raising prices on the production end of things is a perceived easier way to raise profit overall once product begins to decline as demand increases and secure the precedent of price increases even when crude prices are low.

It won't matter much. It will take at least 5 years to get to the oil, and then I read that there is only a 5 years supply in Alaska anyway.

I don't have a problem with the drilling. It's the mess they make that they won't clean up that's the problem.

You should watch "Collapse," you'd enjoy it.
The issue is the American model, our way of life. The suburbs are an uniquely American concept, if you go to Europe the cities are surrounded by rural farm land, there's no sprawl for the nation's food to travel miles through to reach urban centers, its right there. It also means most people can bike or walk to work, in fact I drove a civilian vehicle twice the entire time I lived in Europe. In contrast we've built a nation dependent on automobiles, not just oil, which is why we're in this mad rush to find more oil and a replacement instead of something more viable. The issue will never go away until one of two things happens, we find a viable renewable clean energy source or we change our lifestyle as a nation. I think the latter is going to happen by force of consequence before the former happens.

Screw the birth certificate, I want to see his voter's registration card.
Again, he hands the republicans exactly what they have wanted, exactly what the left has campaigned against for decades.
The hard cold reality is that oil is a finite, limited, non-renewable source that it is long past its useful life, and the sooner we accept that and expand our thinking to include alternative sources the sooner we can tell the big oil and the middle east to go fuck themselves.
Alternative sources become economically viable is when gas is hovering around $4.00+ / gallon. It's painful, unpopular and necessary if we are ever going to get off this addiction. Jones-ing always is.
The only thing I am seeing about this president that's progressive is...absolutely nothing.

Can't argue with that. I wish he'd grow an identity, use his individuality and yell a little.

Yeah, I am hoping this is some brilliant strategy that I am simply too dumb to understand? Maybe it brings some center-right voters his way for the next election? He doesn't realy want high gas prices on his hands as he moves into the election cycle.

We shouldn't be to hard on Obama because the last POTUS to push for and sign into law any progressive legistlation was Nixon. Everybody since has been chipping away at the New Deal. Including Obama.
