What Book You Reading?

Thought there was a thread running along this line of thought, but I can't find it...must be mistaken.

Just finished Stieg Larrson's 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' trilogy, which I enjoyed, and started John Burdett's 'Bangkok 8' at the suggestion of a bookshop proprietor.

Then I thought; "Hell, these guys read too, why not ask them?"

When I was laid up in the hospital I watched the entire series in subtitles. I read the first and thought it was good.

I've been reading The Starter by scott sigler it is about a galactic football leave set way in the future. Plus I am a character in the book. True story.

Word is that there is a fourth to the series on Larrson's laptop that the family and his partner are arguing over, and an outline for #5...

Paladin, the film version of the 'Girl Who Kicked the Honest Nest' doesn't quite do justice to the book...but that's just my opinion...as righteous as it is mind you...so when I have finished with Bangkok 8 I will pick up 'The Starter' now that I am aware of the connection...

After I've finished, will you be identifiable?

I watched the first Girl movie and thought the characters were hugely interesting, enough outsized to be believable while not a comic book. If you are an Amazon Prime customer both the subtitled and dubbed versions are free downloads.

Just finished "Failure in the Saddle" about the Chickamauga campaign, excellent book about the importance of Calvary in the Civil War era.

Reading "Neptune's Inferno" about the Navy's battle at Guadalcanal when the not quite ready for war Navy went up against the best surface action and night fighting navy in existance, got their asses whompped badly and then learned how to beat them. Few of us realize the Navy suffered 3x the causualties that the Marines did at Guadalcanal.

Uhh..Oh man.

I just finished rereading The Dresden Files (Fantasy/Mystery), and am waiting for book fourteen to come out in June. I'm rereading the Harry Potter series because now that all the girls my age are freaking out about Twilight, I can read it in peace without people assuming I'm part of the Cult Fandom.

And since the Game of Thrones miniseries is coming out on HBO soon, I'm going to start rereading that. I do love me some George R R Marten. And I've also got a crap ton and a half of Neil Gaiman novels to wade through.

Did I mention I've got a book a day habit?

my friends keep telling me to read the dresden books, but I just haven't been arsed yet. I do love the TV show and was pretty pissed it was only on for, what, ten episodes?

I'm re-reading this rage of ehcos by simon clarke right now because I'm a huge horror nerd. I found a bunch of stuff I forgot I had while we've been unpacking after the most recent move. have the new tom picirilli pulp book on pre-order from amazon.

The books are so much better. You get so much more of Dresden's inner dialogue.

Think I will pick that one up. The naval battles in the Solomons in 1942- 43 were slaughters for both sides. In the end we had more ships, better radar, and ( eventually ) better leadership.
Oh, and air supremacy.

Air was the key, amazing how superior the Japanese were to the Americans at the start of the war, but 6 months in the Americans adjusted and were beating the Japanese regularly, even though the Zero was quite capable of out-dogfighting anything we had. The Americans stopped dogfighting and just started using the strafe and run tactics, depending on superior firepower and armor and self sealing gas tanks.

Yea off the north coast of Guadalcanal the water is still called Ironbottom Sound. What a cat fight that was. Interesting point I didn't know - Admiral Callaghan getting ready to fight the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal - one of 5 major battles fought around Guadalcanal - knew he was facing at least one battleship and was overheard stating the only way to fight a battle ship with a cruiser (he had 2 cruisers and 4 destroyers against a battleship, cruiser and 2 destroyers plus transports) was to get within 2000 yards, which was suicide and he knew it. He did it and died in the battle, But his force damaged the Hiei so badly she was was still circling helplessly the next morning and was a tasty breakfast for the Cactus Air Force, the first Japanese battleship sunk in the war.

The Japanese came up with brilliant fighter designs- the A6M2 for the Navy and the Ki- 43 for the Army- that suited their severely constrained armaments budgets. But they were still trying to fight WW1 aerial battles that concentrated on horizontal tactics ( dogfighting or turning combat ) and the Americans decided quite early on to concentrate on the vertical dimensions of aerial combat. Even with technically " inferior" designs like the P-40 or the F4F Wildcat they still held their own against the best the Japanese could throw at them.
When better fighter designs such as the P-38 Lightning or F6F Hellcat showed up, the Japanese air forces could barely compete.

I'm bad with remebering the authors names;

-Sniper, single shot warriors of Iraq and Afghanistan-

-Colonel Roosevelt-

-The Conservatives assault on the Constitution-

The last 2 I've started but haven't had much time to pick up where I've left off here of late.
