“This is a gun bill, an NRA bill,” the Chickamauga Republican said. “You’re either for guns, or you’re against guns.” Typical blatant flexing of NRA power. And then LaPierre's response to Obama's invitation, “Why should I sit down with a group of people who have spent their life fighting the Second Amendment?” he said.

Some have stated that support for the NRA's militant stance is generational, as the older "gun generation" dies off a more moderate group will take over. I don't know if the crazed frenzy can be turned off that easily.

One of the reasons its generational is because people from my generation have had to put up with so much crap back in the 70s and 80s by the gun grabbers on the left. People who every chance they had insulted gun owners, I remember Mario Cuomo making the statement when the question was asked about mandatory seat belt laws, he said "the people that are against it are just like gun owners, fat drink beer and don't vote". Sometimes in my past I actually thought that a lot of the gun grabbing dems were moles for the gop.

I understand and agree, many on the left went too far. I've seen a moderation in the CA Legislature, last year three bills that would have placed restrictions on gun owners were defeated. The current governor and attorney general aren't pushing any gun control measures, they are too centrist besides having bigger fish to fry. Many of our current CA gun laws were enacted as a response to separatist groups and gangs, but they lost the balance with the rights of gun owners. Another case of simplistic solutions to much more complicated problems.

Ah, the notion of considered, carefully contemplated rational thought having voice in the malaise of American political rhetoric....

Voices like that of Jay Bookman are all too often shouted down by the dim whited uneducated illiterate fools that make up much, if not all, of the ultra right.

It is wonderful that they can still be heard.
