Paywall, but I think I can get the print version from my stepfather this weekend.

Being prepared for natural disasters that can happen in one's locale makes sense. Where I live, it's power outages due to storms, tornadoes, and that sort of thing. I'm probably better served to bug IN than bug out, unless a tornado destroys my neighborhood. If I were, for example, just north of downtown Los Angeles, I would be well-suited to be ready to bug out at a moment's notice.

Happily, I have a couple of bug-in AND bug out locations I can use if the need arises. Will they suffice? I hope so, but I also know that they may not. I can only do what I can do.
Eventually I'll figure out this signature thing and decide what I want to put here.

Could be I’m older enough for the term “prepper” to have a somewhat different connotation. Long years ago it was something of a fad to have a bomb shelter in your back yard. These were often used for their intended purpose and saved countless lives which allowed America to re-emerge as the last nation standing. I can let you in on a deal for a bridge in England, also.

I do own some firearms, but they’re not particularly well suited for lethal combat against a determined group of adversaries, still there is hope. I have some number of acres on which could be inserted an underground fortress but would rather spend the time and money on something fun. The people who build, sell, and install the things have different motivations.

I have a refrigerator, a fire extinguisher, generator. Tools for an optimism based preparation strategy. Should a lone robber come knocking, I would probably grab a pistol and a phone. Should the beans go to burning on the stove, I can deal with that also. I have no hope of staving off a brace of bandits anymore that I can fight a fire which has spread. That’s what the doors and the windows and the insurance are for. I’m fortunate that homeowners insurance is still within my reach. Not very sexy, is it?

Each must decide what best suits themselves. I don’t know what I might think if I were 50 years younger today. I can still leave the house and not be afraid of dying. Everyone is a mix of optimist, pessimist, realist. Like the three branches of government, each should have equal say.

If a robber comes to get your stuff, you could realistically stop him. If the cops come to get your guns, they will. The military doesn't care about your guns. Fortified foxhole, dehydrator, and fifty thousand rounds of military ball isn’t my style.

For me, this place seems best suited for having/poking fun. I had mistaken it for a gun forum, but that is tertiary to it’s purpose. I actually like it better this way. I do learn from it. Thanks to all the forum moderators and behind the scene folks.

When we look at how natural disasters go, after the initial incident and week or so, most folks can go back home unless it's flooded, burned, blown away, or something like that. Most evacuees go home in America. Agencies spring up to feed and clothe folks until they go home. Like home will still be there. That's my reasoning. But note above I would take my guitar. So there's that bow to uncertainty.

Should we be prepping beyond arranging for six packs being delivered? Here is a reddit thread analyzing why poor people voted red.
You could prove to them beyond a shadow of a doubt that their vote directly led to their hardship and I genuinely think they’d outright reject it and blame the most prominent democrat on no basis whatsoever.

He's the lyin'est president in American history. I'm surprised he hasn't gotten his tongue sunburned.

I grew up and have family in the Caribbean. Having what people call “preps” is just a normal thing to do. A pantry, lots of dried or canned goods, first aid, and water purification means are fairly easy to get.

I wound myself up during the campaigns and still have large concerns about what is happening. But, I think it’s better to focus on what I can do to help my neighbors etc and be active locally.

Running away into the “wilderness” in the US is a farce considering how large the population is and how nowhere is more than a tank of gas from the next place…. Imho
