You don't have to join if you just want to read the public parts of the site, which is what these bots do.

I get that part, but what of the advertisement posts? Do the nonsubscribers simply take up bandwidth or whatever it's called?
I'm about as non-computer as they come.

There's no scanning that I know of, though I don't think my access level allows me to see absolutely every plugin that is installed.
