The new film Emilia Pérez

A surprisingly great semi musical crime comedy trans fairytale film about a cartel drug lord who wants to transition into a woman. Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón made history in the spring when she became the first transgender woman to win Best Actress at the annual Cannes Film Festival.

The make up person should get an Oscar really. And I really also like Zoe Saldaña who always does a bang up acting job in this and other shows.
Course it's on Netflix.
I figured a few here may be bored to death with the politics. My wife loved it too.

I just watched it. The whole concept blows my mind! But it was really well done and well acted!

Yeah. That was intense. Several things stand out. First, not all people knew what a stressful thing it is when a person thinks their gender is wrong. Without the resources to change things, there would be despair. But with resources, change could take place--but then the movie examines whether a person really is changed or can be changed, that things happening before the change are still the same. Papa's smell. That rocked. Really interesting camera work.

I must say that I never conceived of a musical being a vehicle for this kind of interesting psychological introspection and exposition. There were some really fine performers in there. It was surprising so many times when they'd break into song and/or dance. Dancing on the tables in that one scene looked dangerous. Most enjoyable and thought provoking.

They did good at the Golden Globes last night.
And I get that "papa smell". My dad always smelled like NG having worked in the gas fields all day. I can still smell traces of him in his workshop.

The film did very well at the Golden Globes last night. The voters in the Golden Globes are 300 foreign press members from around the world. It was nominated and won in best picture Musical/Comedy and best foreign film since it's Mexican, that wouldn't be the case in other awards ceremonies. The SAG Awards and the People's Choice Awards and then the Academy Awards will follow. Voters in the SAG and Oscars are actors, writers, producers, directors so a different voting block. We'll see what happens.
