3-year-old Louisville child dies of self-inflicted gunshot, father arrested

Louisville KY (more specifically, the Fern Creek area of Louisville):

Her father put the loaded pistol under the sofa, then fell asleep. What woke him up was the sound of gunfire.

According to the news report, he already has a felony conviction (for I don't know what), and is not supposed to even have a gun in his possession.

Yet another case study in "Irresponsible storage of guns, leading to utter tragedy."

Eventually I'll figure out this signature thing and decide what I want to put here.

Agreed. But I think we probably differ on the definition of "safe storage". In this case we are talking about, I doubt we'll ever get compliance amongst folks who aren't supposed to be in possession of firearms in the first place...the weight of any more legislation and restrictions will fall squarely on the shoulders of those legal gun owners who are likely already exercising safe storage without further legislation or restrictions. I think this guy should be prosecuted to the Nth degree but it won't save another child or family.

I'm all for authorities to find out who put this felon in possession of a firearm and punish them as well. The key here is to keep guns out of the hands of people who can't handle the responsibility. But that won't happen - they'll use this situation to restrict ownership of firearms for people who are in legal possession and accept the responsibility of safe storage.
