Going to the range twice tomorrow, in fact, to let a couple of new people try out various guns. Lots of people in the trans community in Houston are suddenly interested in guns for some totally unknowable reason.
And one of the best firearms for self-defense against multiple assailants is a semi-automatic rifle such as an AR-15, chambered in 5.56 NATO or similar. It's relatively lightweight, is shoulder-fired, and has relatively low felt recoil, all making it pretty easy to use for defense. The ammo is affordable and available. Every one of the folks you're mentioning should own one, especially since A.) it's Texas, B.) Palmetto State Armory is having a fire sale on these rifles, and C.) the rifles--and their standard-capacity magazines--are totally legal in Texas.

It is, therefore, particularly sad, and I'd even argue discriminatory, that too many officials, including some in Texas, want to ban this fine tool of self-defense. You've faced discrimination. So have I, so I know how it feels, too; please remember that. Therefore, gimme my semi-auto rifle...and give you yours, too.

Wise decision.
Wiser still if that person is competent in safe handling and best of all...able and, if necessary, willing to...

A personal observation:
I resumed my role as a range safety officer just this year and have noted a significant rise in the number of liberals who are first time shooters. The instructors are also noticing that liberals have made up a substantial portion of their students since 22.

Do what makes you comfortable. If you must leave them, please make it with someone who understands right from wrong.

Yes I know that you're not dying, but the re-disposition of firearms can be a legal headache. Many people that may be willing to accept them for safekeeping might not know if they can legally do so. There are zillions of laws dealing with them because they are a single point in common with so damn much misery. Let's say you wind up somewhere where the guns can never go. Should you for whatever reason not return, you have another problem, and have gifted the keeper with a problem also. Their life situation may change, making continued possession impossible or unsafe. Those guns are your responsibility.
Emotional attachments are for living things, and memories. The rarest, highest priced gun ever brought at auction, is just a piece of metal, wood.

I ordered a case of optimism from Amazon, but porch pirates beat me to it. Still, chin-up.
