How do I store guns while out of the country?

1
sigh

I hate that's it's come to this, but I have made the decision that I am going to leave the country, at least for a while we see how bad Trump is going to be this time. (I am not interested in hearing anyone's argument for why I should stay, so don't bother with that if you are thinking about it.)

So now I need to decide what to do with my guns. I hate the thought of selling them, so I am wondering what kind of options there are for safely storing them in the US while I am out of the country. Does anyone have any experience or information on how I can do that?

Depending on jurisdiction, you might have to transfer them. I tried talking the range I'm the RO at into letting me store my shit in their vault while I was in Asia for an extended stay. The owner was happy to store my cello's and guitars for me, but firearms needed to transfer to her. Then transfer back to me when I returned.

In the end I took the bolts and slides to a safety deposit box, the ammunition to a storage unit, and the receivers stayed locked in a long gun safe along with an old fender stratocaster and Gibson es 175.

The guns were crying when I got back...said something about the blues.

Sell the guns Eris. I doubt there'll be much to come back to.

You're going to miss all the fun. Sell them. Guns don't wire transfer as easily as money. Could never figure out the exchange rate between Colts and Berettas anyhow.

Used to be a thing for survivalists to bury them in heavy wall (Sch 80) PVC pipe. They seal nicely, and you will never remember where you put them (air((dirt)) tag?) Cheap metal detector I have won't find an Abrahams tank at 2 feet. An archeologist or construction crew will find them for you.

Sorry you feel leaving the US is your only choice Eris, but I'm sure you've considered alternatives. I'll leave it to others to advise on your guns.

I was younger when I lived in another country, to anyone considering it be very patient and flexible as things often work very differently than in the US. I meant to post this article on moving to another country.

I have considered many times moving out of this country. More so lately. Good on you, Eris, for beating the rush and checking out your options. My decision has been that when I decide it is time to take my leave is to place significant/transfer the heirloom stuff to nieces, nephews and friends and sell everything else to fund the move in part. As you are finding out, keeping them safe and out of the hands of undesirables for an extended period will be difficult, time consuming, and likely expensive. Not sure how many firearms you have. Good luck and stay in touch.

Asshole will have to start up a gang of syncophants (Brownshirts) to do his dirty work, as I just don't see the military taking up arms against the populace, regardless of crap from the top. After all, it would include their family & loved ones.

If bullets fly to any great extent, it will go full on flame no matter who fired the first shots.

We may have to gird our loins and set land boundaries, or abandon what is left of our beloved land.

I'm not mentally ready for either outcome yet.

I'm concerned that by the time it gets so bad that those who can leave, want to leave, they won't be able to get out or there will be no where to go.. It's not gonna happen in one swoop but America is clearly in an ever increasing tail spin. It's going to take years yet until the water gets hot enough that the frogs start trying to jump out of the pan. I am increasingly hunkering down and taking a wait and see position *but* I'm an older white male and financially secure.

If I were a member of some increasingly marginalized group, immigrants, people of color, poor people, LGBTQ+ , etc. I'd be much more concerned about my personal options. Having lost my Wife and having no children, I'm perfectly content now to sit and watch it unfold and help who I can.

I have family obligations, so cannot bail out. I also lack the means to bail out.

What I can--and must--do is build into my existing social networks and do the mutual aid thing as long as I'm able.

I'm an older white guy, too, so fairly low on what I'll call the Niemöller list, but that list was written for reasons.
Eventually I'll figure out this signature thing and decide what I want to put here.

Those who have the financial means have always been able to live wherever they wanted, in the US or overseas. If you move out of the US and still retain your US citizenship, you're required to pay US taxes on your income. Actress Eva Longoria in todays news said she and her family would be living mostly in Mexico and Spain, they can do it financially. With very few exceptions it takes 5 years in most countries to get citizenship and participate in all their social safety net programs.

Read someplace that very, very few people left the US when Trump was elected in 2016. I expect the same will be true this time around. Trump talks about what concerns most voters, Democrats don't.

The otf knife is as illegal as the guns.

Thanks for all the responses! I haven't yet made up my mind, but one thing that has been suggested to me is to form a gun trust with someone I know and trust. I've also got an offer to store my guns from someone I do know and trust. I'm still not sure what I'll do, other than go to the range a lot between now and when I leave. Going to the range twice tomorrow, in fact, to let a couple of new people try out various guns. Lots of people in the trans community in Houston are suddenly interested in guns for some totally unknowable reason.
