Teen arrested after Detroit raid uncovers illegal 3D-printed gun operation

(CBS DETROIT) - A raid at the house in Detroit may have stopped several so-called ghost guns from hitting the streets after uncovering an illegal 3D-printed gun operation.

The operation was the result of a joint investigation between the Detroit Police Department and Homeland Security after they intercepted a package from China containing a Glock switch, a device that converts a handgun into a fully automatic weapon.

"Approximately 12 handgun lowers, and five rifle lowers, that's the lower portion of a handgun, were recovered. Also a 3D-printed glock switch was recovered, and some other tools that would help in the manufacturing of said devices," Connor said.

"It's scary for everyone. At that age, do they have the ability to know right from wrong? What are their intentions with these weapons? Do they have the maturity? There's a lot that goes through our minds about those crimes," Connor said.

Tech shapes tech way we live far more than any law. Something as simple as being to initiate combustion at will makes everything from a cooked meal to space travel possible. When we're gone, Earth will be a boring place again... until the next asteroid.

Evil 3D printed guns, like evil assault weapons. It's not an operational handgun, it's just the lower. AFAIK a steel barrel is still needed and a firing pin and probably metal pins and springs. A fully operational 3D handgun won't get through metal detectors. Usual media article full of ignorance, reporters don't know enough about firearms to ask intelligent questions.

Criminal organizations have always had access to firearms and some have lathes to manufacture parts and build their own.

All the other bits are available without any background check or registration in most cases and venues. One can buy many gun parts other than the serial #'d contraption on ebay, though they don't allow "assault weapon anything near as I can tell. I've sold some gun parts there, but was threatened with shame and dishonor should I try to sell any more AR parts. Cheaper and cheaper CNC machines will fill that gap sooner than later.
