Hello, from Boston, MA!

1
Hi all, new member from Boston looking forward to meeting other gun owners and people who won't give me odd looks for expressing interest in firearms! Grew up around guns between Boy Scouts, a (very) brief stint in Civil Air Patrol, military mom and hunting family dad. Moved to MA for school and did my best to go to ranges where I could rent and keep my skills from fully rusting. I've shot everything from .22lr up to .50BMG and am hoping to get back into long range shooting, though there's an unfortunate lack of 100+ yard ranges that I could easily get to on my own (my current only means of transit is my trusty bicycle or bumming a ride from one of my non-shooting friends).

Current armory is:
HK P30SK for my EDC
Ruger PCC in AR configuration
Springfield M1A Scout Squad
Sendra pre-ban AR15

Also a casual motorcycle enthusiast buying his first bike soon, so if any of you know a good solid way to transport something like the M1A on the back of a cruiser, I'm all ears. Looking forward to getting to know you all and hope to see some other MA members at the range!

Howdy and welcome from Houston! Boy Scouts is a common introduction. Treasury Valley was or likely still is a BS camp in Massachusetts where I got my introduction to .22LR. It sure was fun, I still remember it.

Been contemplating how to carry a rifle to the range too. LoL.

That's a damn fine looking machine there! I hope to one day have one that looks so gorgeous, but that'll have to wait until after I've thoroughly beat up my first and gotten all my mistakes out of the way.

I've seen those rifle scabbards, and that rifle boot, floating around as suggestions. I'm not wholly confident I'll actually be able to mount the latter, though, and I'm about 90% sure a leather scabbard, even one that's fully enclosed, wouldn't meet MA's standards for the rifle being cased while on the public way. I'll probably have to leave the M1 at home unless I'm heading to the range with someone who has a car. Yet another reason to bully my friends into getting their LTCs lol

It is an interesting problem to ponder though. Likely meeting Massachusetts requirements will be tough.

:welcome: from down Kentucky way!

How about a case for a bass guitar, modified to accept a long gun or two?

As for bicycling for transportation, a couple of long-time Very Smart People live not far from you. They sometimes do workshops through the CyclingSavvy program. I've let my status lapse, sadly, but I used to be an instructor in that program, and it's a great program. cyclingsavvy.org has a lot of safety content, too!
Eventually I'll figure out this signature thing and decide what I want to put here.

I've seen the guitar case suggestion as well before, but my main concern with that is how far it continues beyond the seated part of me while seated as I would have to be on my bicycle or motorcycle. To say nothing of the aerodynamics nightmare any part protruding over my shoulders/head would present. It's a conundrum, for sure, but one I'm determined to tackle one way or another. Might just end up buying a pelican case, drilling some holes in the bottom of it, and mounting it wide on the luggage rack.

As for cycling savvy, looks like a lot of good info there, I'll give it a read some time. I've been a daily bicycle commuter for the past 2.5~ years, and thankfully the bike infra in Boston is getting better, but more learning is always good! Though I'm fairly sure I'll find that my style of cycling violates every best practice they'd list lol

Welcome from Ohio (a smidge down the road from you LOL)!

Also interested in getting back into LRS (was strongly considering getting into 6.0 Creedmore, but with time and review, I think the availability of the 6.5 makes it a better investment.

I also love 22LR but dang it won't reach out and touch 1300 yds.

I have retired from use of motorcycles, but for a portion of my military days the only vehicles I had working were motorcycles and managed to go 18 months where I only needed to hitch a ride 5 days. (The snow cycle happened to fall mostly on weekends that year, and Colorado = Year-Round Motorcycle insurance.)
