A man was shot while trying to steal purses in a northwest Houston office building, police said.
Houston police said the shooting happened at Fleetwood Claim Service, 2855 Mangum Road, just north of the Northwest Freeway, shortly after noon Tuesday.
Detectives said a business owner heard his wife screaming that someone was going through purses on the fourth floor of the building, so he grabbed his gun.
The business owner tried to stop the man and the two got into a struggle, investigators said.
"When he tried to stop him, the perpetrator started beating on him, and he asked him, 'Stop beating on me. I don't want to have to pull a pistol.' And he kept on him. Eventually, he had to pull a pistol, and he got shot," said Terry New, a witness.
The suspected purse thief suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where his condition has not been released.
Police said the man is from out of state and may have other criminal cases pending.
