Brand New Beretta 30X Tomcat

Redesigned to eliminate the cracking issues they had with the frames and hot .32 ACP. They moved the magazine release and changed the barrel pop up from a lever to a push button. Just the changes I was looking and hoping for *plus* the rear sight can be removed and replaced with a Red Dot Optic mount.

I expect it'll be awhile before we get the RDO mounts but I got a mess of hand loaded .32 ACP and I'm gonna pound on this little monster and see how it holds up. She's pretty stout for a pocket pistol but I have wanted one for years and it goes well in my Beretta Herd. Not shot it yet but that'll be next week.

I disassembled it to get all the shipping gunk and whatever lube they put in it at the factory and get the test fire residue out. She's all lubed with my favorite stuff and I have been dry firing it and manipulating all the controls to get contact surfaces burnished and broke in. The trigger in both DA and SA is really nice right out of the box and improving with dry fire and premium lube. I'm really enamoured with the engineering especially the recoil spring(s) design. The barrel is supported/locked at both ends and does not move during firing so she should be a tack driver at reasonable distances.

Can't wait to put a couple hundred rounds thru her and see how the gun performs. In hand and visually it's pretty impressive in fit and finish.

The mounts I have seen are the ones that replace the rear site and mount into the rear dovetail. Beretta says there is no ETA on them but I saw some in videos and promotional stuff....

I have Toni Systems Dovetail RDO Mounts on my Px4's and they are around 1000 rounds now with no shifts in zero nor loosening of the mounts. If installed correctly I think the major drawback to the dovetail mounts (as opposed to milling the slide) is that they sit a couple MM higher which has not seemed to have impacted my functionality.

Agreed but the safety on this one is just a pretty lever and a red dot to show it's hot...it will allow the gun in single action to be locked but Beretta does not recommend it be carried this way. I don't think that's because it's unsafe in "cocked and locked" mode so much as the whole gun revolves around a DA/SA action with a tip up barrel. The "proper" way to carry it would be to insert a full magazine, pop up the barrel and insert one in the tube, then lock the barrel down leaving the gun ready to go with the hammer down in DA mode.

From half cock the pistol just needs a DA trigger pull (which is a safety feature in its own right....) which is long but crisp and fairly light to get her into action and then subsequent trigger pulls for follow ups are SA with a short reset. I believe this is the only DA/SA pistol on the market that can be loaded without ever racking the slide. It's touted as a pocket gun for folks with limited hand strength due to age, stature, or infirmity.

There is no extractor, no drop hammer/decocker, no right side safety, nor ambidextrous mag release to keep the gun as small as possible. It's already quite wide and while relatively small it's a little monster weight and width wise. Allegedly a pussycat in recoil and we'll see about that soon enough.

Group Therapy. 200 rounds down range yesterday on Range Day - about 25 rounds of mixed factory ammunition including FMJ round noses, some Hornady XTP hollow points, and some old Winchester FMJ flat nose bullets. In the first few mags worth I had one FTE. One the last magazine of the factory stuff I got a rim lock where one of those shorty flat nose Winchester FMJ's locked the rim of the round above it and I could not clear it until i got home. Switched to the second mag and handloads.

71 gr. Berry's plated round nose bullets over 3.2 gr. of Unique. These clocked at 1100 FPS out of a Colt 1903 Pocket Hammerless when I developed them so they are on the hot side. I suspect they are running a bit slower out of the Tomcat's 2.4" barrel. But we had the paper flying and they fed like butter with no malfunctions or issues of any kind. The little monster is surprisingly accurate and recoil is minimal.

I plan on running 600+ rounds thru it before it gets carried so next week's Range Day is 200 more thru the pocket monster. Too much fun.
