RCBS Sold to Hodgdon Powder

1
OROVILLE – RCBS Precisioneered Reloading has been sold to Hodgdon Powder Company, the largest U.S. supplier of smokeless and black powder substitute propellants.

Hodgdon, based in Shawnee, Kansas, purchased the local manufacturer of reloading tools on May 2 from Revelyst, a segment of Vista Outdoor Inc., a collective of maker brands that design and manufacture performance gear and precision technologies. Vista Outdoor owned RCBS for nine years.

Hodgdon and RCBS have a decades-old relationship. Bruce Hodgdon, who founded Hodgdon in 1947, and RCBS founder, the late Fred Huntington, conducted reloading roadshow events together throughout the United States in the 1950s and 1960s.

“For years, our friends have referred to the Hodgdon family and company as ‘The Gunpowder People’ and this acquisition further demonstrates our dedication to the handloader,” said the company’s co-owner J.B. Hodgdon, in a press release.

A rural town known for ammo manufacturing, sounds like the story of Cascade Cartridges, Inc better known as CCI. Dick Speer and his partner founded it at the Speer plant in Lewiston, Idaho. Lewiston is a beautiful little college town where the Snake and Clearwater rivers meet in northern Idaho. Speer is also known for their Speer Gold Dot ammo used by US and international law enforcement because of its quality.

Love RCBS and most of (virtually all of) my Dies are RCBS. Hopefully this will be a good thing for both companies but I don't know how they can make RCBS work any better than it is already. Hopefully the level of precision and the customer service and support will continue to be an industry standard. Even my press is a single stage RCBS green machine probably 60+ years old. It just works.

I have an RCBS Powder Cop die. Also came into possession of some older, 1970's-era RCBS dies. They feel solidly made. Turns out I won't need them because I already have full sets of Lee dies that I had previously bought. But if there's another new handloader that comes along, they'll get those RCBS dies.

There are some RCBS items that are now made in China, for example the scales. They used to be made in USA, like my RCBS 10-10 beam scale (good scale, BTW). Hopefully this purchase of them by Hodgdon signals a return to entirely "Made In USA".

Considering the relationship that had existed between the founders of both companies this is likely a good match. Certainly better than a outdoor goods conglomerate that likely has anti gun types in its shareholder base.
