Outside our bedroom window lives an old navel orange tree covered in blossoms filled by roaring bees. Every spring for over thirty years it's done this, so I always associate the smell of orange blossoms with the roaring of the bees. This makes both the sound and the smell somehow richer. They're there now.

This interesting TED talk argues for more diversity in gardens. By letting one's garden "go wild," we create more opportunities for local wildlife and soil organisms to grow with our food and flowers.

Sounds like the quintessential English garden, not neat rows like you see in public parks, but a variety of trees, shrubs and flowers.

My basil, cilantro, thyme, chives, spear and pepper mint all prospering. Going to plant two types of sweet corn tomorrow - one small patch by patio and the other up near house front besides porch where I had some bougainvillea removed. Hopefully, if the ones in front survive, the local thieves won't steal it.

When I first read this post, I was interested in growing some of the stuff myself. Starting small, a planter should do nicely I thought. Grabbed the phone- Siri… get me Swiss Chard seeds. They arrive quickly, plant, water, wait...wait…

Guess that voice recognition has a bit further to go before perfect.

I always soak my seeds overnight in warm water before I plant them. But this time I bought already growing plants from our local Little Red Hen store, which employs people who have mental problems. One of their problems is they love to grow plants. If you have some seeds left, soak them overnight in warm water then plant. You should get some sprouts.

The idea of a rotating summerhouse sounds like something straight out of a fantasy novel. I mean, who wouldn't want a cozy little spot that spins to catch the best sunlight all day long?

But, before diving into the spinning oasis dream, let's mull over practicalities. How durable are these structures? Are they sturdy enough to withstand wild weather swings? And maintenance-wise, are they more hassle than they're worth?

As for me, I'm all for innovative chill spots, but I also like to keep it grounded. The concept is cool, but I'd need more info before committing. Plus, I wonder about the cost. Are these rotating summerhouses budget-friendly, or are they more of a luxury splurge?

I wish I could rotate out the neighbor's trees for six or eight hours a day so I could grow tomatoes. But, alas, it is not to be.

As luck would have it, last night I harvested the first of the basil. I'll have two pretty good bushes of basil in a week or two. But that crisp and sweet taste of the fresh basil graced my rice last night. Totally worth it.

Never got to plant my corn and cilantro, thyme and chives flat got destroyed by a squirrel. As I posted in another thread, started a hydroponic herb garden in house early December with mediocre success - only Dill & Parsley sprouted and fairly spindly - cilantro, thyme, rosemary,oregano, tarragon, chives all no shows so far. Nothing like the pictures you see of small hydroponic systems ads or blurbs flourishing and bushy. I may try lettuces next and hope for better results or maybe pepper plants. I had a green thumb in the past using soil, but not doing to well in that department currently with hydro. LOL

I miss having a garden because water is too expensive here. It would probably be filled with every geranium or pelargonium that I could find. My favorites and they're low maintenance. Chicken wire around and on top of plants you want to protect from fuzzy critters. A neighbor almost lost plants to cottontail rabbits and chipmunks, the chicken wire saved what was left.
