When I saw it listed under "new revolvers," I double-checked the date to make sure it wasn't April Fool's day!

I imagine this is meant for silhouette shooters. It's utterly insane for anything besides a range toy. Even with the short barrel, high pressure and cylinder gap, I imagine it would push a bullet faster than 2000 fps - BBTI data show something like 600-700 fps loss from 23" down to the 5.5" Single Six in .22 Magnum, and this is a much hotter cartridge. We won't talk about the Circuit Judge numbers, but the Six could almost touch 1600 fps with a light bullet. It should shoot very flat, with enough energy to knock over a steel target, but you'd better reload for it. Like .30 Carbine, I don't think I've seen factory ammo since the summer of 2020.

Highdesert, if you haven't tried it yet, you should try Federal Punch. It's a 29 grain flat nose plated round rated for 1650 fps out of a 24" barrel. It's really accurate, with better penetration than Stingers. There is a 10 shot GP100 in .22LR already, but again, I haven't seen one in yoinks.

Thanks wings for that info, I'll have to try it.

SGAmmo.com had this ammo in stock, either 50 round boxes or 1000 round cases. Pretty much the only place I could find...

Btw, they say it can't be shipped to CA...

Assuming the barrels can be bored and rifled with a machine they already have, what new tooling do they need to make these? A chamber reamer, a jig to hold the cylinder for notching (wait, they already have 8-round Redhawks, right?) and a throat reamer?

I'm guessing they don't need to sell TOO many to cover the costs. Which is good...

I guess it's for someone who loves the ballistics of the .22WMR but hates not being able to reload for it?

I was once sorely tempted by a Super Redhawk with a 9.5" barrel in .480 Ruger, but I figured since I *really* doubt I'll ever hunt moose I didn't want to get into something with such an odd size bullet. And that gun made way more sense to me than this one!

That's what I love about this. It's so absurd. There's almost no use case or market for it. Nobody is buying it for carry or defense. It's a big middle finger to the accountants.

You can advertise all you want about courage and not being afraid of taking risks. You can sell guns with ads promoting independence, going your own way, not letting anyone tell you what to do. Or you can churn out a four pound target revolver in an obscure varmint round because you want to.

Reminds me of something I saw at a recent gun show.

One of the dealers had a S&W X-frame, i. e. the same frame as used for the .460 S&W magnum and .500 S&W Magnum rounds. However, it was chambered in something else....

.350 Legend!

Yes, there's a 7-shot .350 Legend revolver now. The chamber walls are really thick, somewhat reminiscent of Ruger's first version of the Redhawk in .357 Magnum. I was like, "dayyum!"

Now, I happen to have and thoroughly enjoy a Super Redhawk. Mine is chambered in .454 Casull, because I wanted the strongest, baddest double-action revolver that could shoot .45 Colt. The SRH 454 is that wheelgun.

Personally, I consider them pretty cool lookin' revolvers, in a sort of post-modern-industrial manner. It's definitely not a "classic" profile. Rather, it's big, beefy, and GROSSLY over-engineered...just how I like it. :-)

I've seen the .350 Legend S&W offered by local gun shops. Think one of our newer members mentioned having one - we had a thread pondering the ballistics in a short barrel. Rifle rounds in revolvers aren't just for BFRs anymore.

I've considered the Alaskan in .454 - I want a double action revolver but I don't want a new caliber. Whatever you think of the way the SRH looks, the Alaskan is adorable. Like a Newfoundland puppy, entirely too large for a snubby but that only adds to the charm. On the other hand, I don't really need another gun.

SACRILEGE!!!! I HEREBY REPORT YOU TO THE GLORIOUS GUN GODS!!!!!!1!!!!!ONE!!!1!!!

:roflmao:

It was actually with a Super Redhawk Alaskan, I believe in .454 Casull, that one fellow used to defend himself against a desperatly hungry, charging brown bear up in Alaska. It took five shots from the SRH to put the bear down, and the bear lay down just 10 feet from the guy. Of course, he reported the DGU to the appropriate authorities, and they determined that yes, his life was in grave danger and he had to defend himself. Turns out the bear's jaw had been damaged and thus it couldn't eat, so...starving, it attacked the first thing it saw that looked like it could be enough food for it.

So, yep, the SRH works.

I love my SRH. I just came in from a hike with it in a chest holster. It's a 44 mag, cut to 4.2" barrel. Very convenient for woods carry. It was rough hiking -- 10" snow, up and down hills, no trails (following deer trails), after dark -- and it carried well. It's like a junior version of the SRH Toklat (SRH in 454 Casull with 5" barrel). I think the Ruger Toklat is named for the Toklat River in Alaska. I live in the Kickapoo River Valley in WI, so I'm thinking of calling this my Ruger Kickapoo. It's probably more gun than anyone needs in WI, but why not?

That sounds like a solid time!

I generally go lightweight for any serious hiking - Ruger SP-101 with medium, . 357 loads. However there’s no serious animal risk at all where I do outdoors stuff. Just good ‘ole ohio meth heads.

Ruger Alaskan Toklat is one of my top grail guns. I don’t like how most of the STHs are super king barreled, and the “standard” Ruger Alaskan is too short and chonky. 5” seems about just right to get something from .454. However, I also lust after a Ruger SBH bisely 5.5 in .454. Haven’t seen either in the wild here though.

Re: something new and impractical from Ruger

Yeah -- the Toklat is a brilliant idea, and I'm happy with my junior version of it.

It was a great hike. I started just before dusk and stayed out well into dark. A white tail buck and I startled one another. I didn't see him until he snorted at me. Sat on a log for a bit -- the stillness of the woods after a heavy snow is amazing. I carried the SBH in a Chesty Puller from Simply Rugged. I wore it for a few hours and basically forgot it was there. Chilly out (25 deg), so I wore it over a wool sweater and long sleeve undershirt with a zip up hoodie over the top. Comfortable, and semi-concealed under the generous and thick hoodie.

I thought about your SP101 3" 357 as I was hiking. That actually seems like a perfect woods gun and much lighter.

There's really no need to carry where I hike. I'm only practicing carrying the 44 because a buddy and I are hoping to hunt wild boar this year. It's a pipe dream for now.

Here, there are black bears, and while black bears generally avoid people, they are still bears. The claws, teeth, and muscles on them things WORK. Therefore, it's a good idea to carry something in bear country, just in case. My choice in black bear country is generally a Security-Six in .357 Magnum loaded with 158gr JSP's. In brown bear country, it'd be bigger, of course, something along the lines of that junior Tolkat.
