Just Purchased My First AR

From Palmetto State Armory. Image not wanting to load so I'll stick to the provided description: 16" MID-LENGTH 5.56 NATO 1/7 NITRIDE 13.5" LIGHTWEIGHT M-LOK MOE EPT RIFLE W/MBUS SIGHT SET

I had originally gone to Sportsman's Warehouse for a M&P Sport II bundle cause they had a great deal which included a free RDO (after rebate), soft case, and AR tool but they were sold out. And by the time I went to order online, the sale had mysteriously disappeared. So I decided to check PSA, saw this marked down from $999 and I said to myself "fuck it, I deserve this." Plus I also just paid even more for a couch today, so I felt further justified.

Will update this once I actually receive it from my FFL.

My state voted in an incredibly restrictive firearms law but luckily the first court challenge has struck it down, for now. I can't be sure what the ultimate decision will be so I figured I should act while I still can.

I appreciate the term "First".

Depending on how happy I am with it and what upgrades I can find for it, it might be also be my last. I'm trying to put more money into ammunition procurement because having a bunch of guns isn't of much use if I have nothing to put through them.

Palmetto State Armory AR-15's are mil-spec, so you should be able to swap in any other mil-spec components for whatever upgrades you want to do. They're not fancy AR's. They're not long-distance match guns. Rather, they're relatively basic AR's that get the job done reliably, and they're remarkably affordable. I think every house should have one at the prices they're currently selling at. And ever since South Carolina took down that symbol of hate from their State Capitol, it's been OK for conscientious folks like us to buy from businesses in that state.

I would also commend your attention to their AR-10's (well, LR-308's). They likewise are good, solid, basic LR-308's that shoot reliably and are spec'ed for .308 Winchester pressures, which means 7.62 NATO is no problem (7.62 NATO is slightly lower pressure spec than civilian .308 Win--opposite of .223 Rem vs. 5.56 NATO).

A little late to reply, been busy with real life stuff, not allowing much time for being online. Currently stuck in queue, again. I thought having my CHL would lead to instant approval, but no such luck. I'm hoping by Wednesday I get the call that I'm clear to head on over and pick it up.

Yep, that's why I'm stocking up on magazines and ammo now, because I'm not hopeful I'll be able to down the road. And I do not like the look of the political/ social climate in this country.

I could've spent my entire profit-sharing bonus on premium build with all the bells and whistles but other purchases needed to be made and I just need something that will get the job done, as it were. My first order of business after taking possession is to take the whole thing apart and reassemble it to familiarize myself with that aspect. After that I'll take it to the range and get more familiar with the operation and from there determine what, if any, parts I want to replace.

As previously stated, I'm stuck in the background check queue once again. My FFL is closed until tomorrow, I'm hoping to take possession of the item at some point this week. When I do I'll return here with pics.

I definitely like how it feels in my hands. Every other AR I've ever fired was considerably heavier than this one so I was surprised when I first picked it up. And that new gun smell. Just wonderful. My wife doesn't understand, but that's okay, I still love her. If I do ever get another, it'll be to replace this one. I'm only one man and am not trying to have more guns than I carry me on at a given time. Not begrudge others their right to have 10 in every room, if that's how they choose to live.

I picked up 2 boxes of 20 at the shop, just so I wouldn't be taking home a very expensive paperweight. Also ordered another 30 round mag and a box of 200 Winchester green tip.

Congrats on the new bang stick!

I refer to mine as my "scary black rifle," even though most of the "furniture" is tan instead of black.

The range I frequent doesn't allow use of green tip ammo--tears up their backstop, apparently. It's a 25-yard indoor range, so I'll respect their wishes. They only allow slugs through shotguns, because the scatter from shot shells tends to be hard on the target retrieval system.

Besides, M193 rounds are cheaper.

Still, enjoy!
Eventually I'll figure out this signature thing and decide what I want to put here.

Depends on your personal preference. I happen not to like red dots. Others do. Try both and see which one works for you.

For any rifle hunting at less than 300 yards--which, where I currently live, constitutes just about all hunting--a nice 1-4.5x20 or 2-7x33 scope is a very good choice. You can use a 3-9x40, which is a fine all-purpose magnification range, but even that's almost overkill in this part of the country unless you're trying to do neck shots. See, out here, 125 yards is considered a "long" shot due to our thick Appalachian woods. That's why the good ol' .30-30 remains so popular, especially out here.
