Potentially more impediments coming to building imports from kits

There is no subforum here for firearm building and probably no interest anyway, so this will sit out under "Interests."

From 2 independent sources, I have heard about possible ATF action on demilling requirements in the import space. The suspicion is the ATF will require destruction of any or all of the following:
  • gas block
  • gas tube
  • piston
  • trunnion
It's worth remembering in 2005 the ATF began to require barrels be excluded or destroyed.

In addition, Misha, who is pretty well dialed-in to goings-on in the industry, recently claimed to have heard something similar from an industry insider, and he made the obvious points that .gov has a lot of latitude to do so and no court case will be able to undo whatever change the ATF makes.

It is no secret the ATF is not thrilled that US residents have been able to build imports on US receivers since the importation of rifles has been banned. The requirement that any 1 or 2 of those parts also be destroyed or excluded from kits would go a long way toward thwarting the growth of building as a hobby. A decline in the dissemination of knowledge required to build many common patterns of imported rifles would, in itself, be a victory for the ATF as well as the greater disarmament lobby.

As of now, nothing has officially been stated by the ATF or CBP about this.

There's a lot more liberal than gun on the forum the last year or two, but time was that we had regular threads on builds, mods and gunsmithing in general.

I can't imagine a subforum dedicated to the topic would receive any less engagement than, say, the tax-stamp subforum.

It's just miserably tedious. It's as useful and helpful to society's ills as those fucksticks that hack credit cards. More and more and more layers of bullshit to wade through. Get a fucking purpose.
I think they need to get a real job instead.

It's one issue that Republicans will be talking about until Election Day 2024. Even if Biden wins reelection, if the Senate goes Republican it will be difficult for him to get political appointees confirmed along with judges. If the current ATF director resigns or is impeached, Biden would have almost zero chance of getting a new one confirmed.
