Steyr-Mannlicher M95 Guidance/Advice?

1
Hello,

I traded for this yesterday.
Image
I've studied the Mosin for over 12 years now, and probably know most everything there is to know about it, mechanically speaking.

I intend to move on to the M95 now.

What can you tell me about the example I have here? I understand the bolts can be stiff on certain examples?

The way the "S" is printed indicates what country the conversation from 8x50r to 8x56r was done, correct?
Image
Were they all converted, or were some built new to 8x56r?

What are the strengths and shortcomings of the M95? Anything special to pay attention to when I take it apart for the first time?

I can't wait to shoot this. I have a few rounds and a clip on the way. Any help is appreciated. And no, preservationists, I'll make no permanent changes to the rifle unless it's a repair.

Regards,

Josh

P.S. I apologize for the bad pics. I used my phone; the camera is at the shop. Thanks again!

I have a 1917 Budapest Mannlicher M95 carbine. They're mechanically the same, these two. My only beef is sometimes the turn bolt piece that grips the rim of the cartridge, the piece with the two lugs, sometimes releases while you're re inserting the bolt. I've learned to avoid this by making sure I've cocked the bolt totally before I slide it in, and then, when I slide it in, i avoid any rotation of the bolt handle. It seems that even one degree of rotation might trigger the turn bolt section to release. This of course captures the entire bolt inside where ever it was when it released. This is a total hassle. I've learned to cock it a a few times, looking to ensure it's all the way cocked, while the bolt is out--to cock it with the bolt out, you have to pull the lug piece back and twist it until it locks. I've also learned to insure the bolt channel ls greased, along with the edges of the bolt, and to slide it smoothly forward. If you get in trouble, post about it. Don't worry. You won't hear me laughing. I have totally been there and done that.

Is yours 8x50r or 8x56?

Thank you, CD. I'll keep all that in mind.

Mine is an 8x56R. I think an 8x50R would have been cooler, but this is what was available in really good condition, and I was tired of waiting.

Regards.

Yeah, that's them! My price came from RCBS, whose factory is about thirty minutes from me. I went there and they said they'd make me a set for three hundred bucks. I have to get that one you posted so I can shoot this bad boy for the first time in decades, since I ran out of milsurp. I have twenty pieces of brass made from new Lapua 7.62x54r fabricated by a case forming friend of mine.. I just never kept looking. Wow. Good call. Sweet.

I just finished ordering them. My guess is, when I went to the factory they didn't have any there, having sent them all to Graf and Sons. Hehe. Glad I did not bite. It's coming USPS, so I hope I live long enough for them to arrive. Now I have to start working up a load. Love that shit. Thanks again.

CD and Cooper,

That's very cool. I'll look forward to a report, CD.

Looks like a Lee set for mine is $40 when available. I'll have to pick up some and locate some brass.

Do you know if these rifles require the cases to be full-length resized? I know I fireform for my Mosin, but it has a mechanical advantage when shutting due to the turn bolt. I'd suspect the M95 might require FLRing.

Thanks!

I'm going to go with .323 gas checked lead boolits. It's designed for 220 to 240 grainers at just over 2000 fps. I'm too old for that shit, so I'm going to work up a load for 180 grainers at that velocity. I will start at the low end. I have 20 cases, so I'll start at the low end and make groups of four. So I'll make five different charges separated maybe by .2 grains--things are still fluid now. I have a few powders to choose from. Unique is my go-to, so maybe I'll start with that. Since the dies are not yet here, I get to feel that anticipation I get when working up a load. Dang. I've not felt that for several years. It's nice. I'll see what I can find for all the powders appropriate for this round, and then decide on a start. Yeah, nice feeling.
