New leather holster.

Just got my first leather holster. Simply Rugged Cuda pancake holster for my 1911. In black. Got their belt in black too. They are beautiful, but any advice on how to soften up the leather? I got the wider belt (1.75") because everyone says get a solid belt and you can carry anything. But wow, it's all so stiff it was a workout to thread the belt through my belt loops and thread it through the slots on the holster.

I think I'm going to like this. It is really good looking in a utilitarian sort of way.

Also, it shipped VERY fast. They said to expect 3-4 weeks, but they shipped it in 6 days. I'm sure the belt was in stock. But I would have thought they'd have to custom make the holster.

Don't soften the leather. The issue with threading the belt through the holster will simply disappear as you gain experience and the whole package melds to you and your pistol. Glad you're happy with your Simply Rugged but mine has gone into one of the Boxes of Shame.

I got an inch and a half gun belt from Hanks. I always use some Fiebing's 100% Pure Neatsfoot Oil - Natural Leather Preservative on all my leather to protect the leather.
It didn't hurt the vertical strength of the belt at all and I've been wearing it over a year now.
I slather it on the holsters though, then wrap the gun in wax paper and stick it in the holster for a few days.

Congrats on new holster and belt. Agree, don't use anything to soften leather. I use Sno Seal to sweat/waterproof my leather holsters and belts as it preserves the leather/seams without softening leather. My favorite belts for EDC are now the ratchet woven belts - extremely stiff and able to carry the weight of whatever you carry with 1/4" adjustments since no spaced holes of normal belts. I have two of the Nexbelts one tan other black. All my other gun belts in holster box of shame along with IWB holsters that will never see use again. I have one Hunter 1100 series holster that's 50 yo and as good as new treated with Sno Seal from the gitgo. Anything leather gets Sno Seal in my house.

Good advice. I've just decided to wear it a lot at home to break it in. But traveling a lot for work, life, etc., now so not conducive. I had 3 hours at home yesterday, so wore the belt and holster while I mowed the lawn. The belt is a pretty normal looking belt, so I'm wearing that daily without the holster to break it in.

Question: If one is wearing a 1911 while mowing the lawn, should one also wear plaid shorts and tall black dress socks with orthopedic shoes? Just wondering how to complete the "get off my lawn" picture.

And Hawaiian Print shirt. But then I don't cut my lawn anymore when I can get it cut for about $10.00.

Not a 1911 but definitely a "Get off my lawn".

That's very cool. For me unfortunately, while it is legal in my county to carry openly when in the woods, California law requires non lead ammo for hunting. If you're carrying in the woods you are assumed to be hunting. The unfortunate part is I can't yet get non lead bullets to load for my .45 cal woods guns. Zut, alors! Maybe I repeat myself. I don't know if I'd want to carry an empty gun to break in my holster. Asking to get it swiped. Now, I have worn them a couple times around the house, maybe a few hours. The 1911 holster still kind of squeaks, but the Vaquero holster is well broke in.

CA residents, beware of purchasing ammo out of state and bringing it back to CA. Chuck Michel, the president of CRPA has verified that this happens. Police state tactics.
CA DOJ agents have been known to unscrupulously surveille Nevada gun shows to identify California buyers purchasing items prohibited in California. Reno is most often the target because it is relatively closer to Northern California than Las Vegas and Arizona are to Southern. Plainclothes agents identify suspected Californians and follow them in, through, and out of gun shows. Some even watch gun store parking lots (the Cabela’s off of I-80 is one) and tail the buyers through the store and back to their cars. The agents have the buyers stopped by CHP or local law enforcement once they have crossed the border.

If you are at a gun show or Nevada retailer, be very careful not to give these agents any probable cause to stop and search you at the border. Never answer any questions or consent to a search if stopped. Only idiots talk to the police and give them consent to search. Remember the phrase “I don’t answer questions and I don’t consent to searches.” Anything you say can be twisted and used against you.

Agents have typically identified Californians by clothing that announces that one likely is a California resident. They then follow the suspects, observe their purchases, follow them to their vehicle (bearing California plate), and once the vehicle crosses the border, marked units make a traffic stop. Of course, getting into a Nevada resident's vehicle (or a rental) that didn't immediately go back into California would ruin that scheme.

I wanted .452 copper to load in the Vaquero for .45LC. This Vaquero also has the .acp cylinder I have yet to work up a load for copper, so I'm starting with the narrower solid copper to see if I get pressure signs. But I have not yet run the experiment. Alas. I think the 1911 will require much more work for me to match the recoil spring tension against the copper bullets. The Vaquero will eat anything and is built like a tank. The Springfield had been flawless with what it likes to eat, but any variation will cause hiccups.
