Best 10mm?

Hey folks,
I'm in the market for a 10mm to carry as a bear gun when I'm fishing / hunting in Montana. I've already made up my mind to go with 10mm over .357 or .44mag (mostly because of weight / size / capacity) but I'd be interested in knowing if anyone has recommendations for any particular brand/size... I am kind of torn between the Springfield XDM and the M&P... but also I love a good 1911 platform too...
what do you think?

People have had issues with the S&W m&p 10mm.

Just Google: “m&p 10mm problems”

I personally have a 9mm and .45 ACP m&p 2.0s with no issues. However those “turn of the century designed” rounds have way less operating pressures.

When you want the best 10mm, you want the Bren Ten…
But then you’d also have to have the requisite hair.

I am a huge fan of the 10mm. I jokingly call it the 1cm. I have about 8 firearms in that caliber; Pistols and AR platform pistols. The choice comes down to preference. Striker fire vs. hammer fire, 1911 VS CZ, Double action vs, Semi Auto vs. Revolver. If I open carry I like the Springfield 1911 TRP RMR. It is a little pricy so if you are budget concerned I can stand behind the Rock Island M1911 A2 Rock Ultra FS HC. Double stacked, so I hope you have large hands. If I conceal I like the EAA Witness Compact (Polymer CZ clone). The smoothest and most reliable would be my Smith & Wesson 610-3 revolver.

haha I'm gonna steal this!
Thanks for the input, guys. I really do like the XDM Elite now that I've gotten to hold it at Sportsman's Warehouse... great feel. Plus they have the one with the sweet olive drab slide... I hated the trigger on the M&P- it was like 6 pounds of sand.

Never encountered a bear when I lived in Montana so have no experience. Apparently Alaska and Montana are the home of the big guys, grizzlies. This is from Alaska's Fish & Game.

Svalbard Islands are in the artic and owned by Norway. Residents are told to carry firearms if they leave settled areas because of polar bears. They recommend rifles or shotgun.

I am curious about 10mm myself. I did try a Glock 20 and loved it, although I was using fairly “warm” Magtech target ammunition (a little over 600 ft. lbs.), as opposed to “hotter” loads (this was the only stuff the gun shop/range had for its rental guns). I have never seen one myself, but rare black bear sightings have been reported in am area of trails I like. I wonder if it would be worth looking into a Glock 29 to carry. The shop/range sells Glock 29s, but they do not have any of them to rent, so I have no experience with how a subcompact like that would handle with “hotter” 10mm loads. It’s probably at least better with recoil than an acquaintance’s S&W 649 in .357 Magnum (I found that gun unpleasant to shoot).

If you like the Bren Ten, then buy the Tanfoglio, its way better than the Bren 10 was. As for S&W vs Springfield, they're both good, just go with the one that fits you best.

I was looking at a comp of .40 .45 9mm and 10mm boolits pic wise. Not sure but I think it's cl I sent to .40 cal.
It says "What caliber is a 10 mm closest to?
The 10mm Auto is a powerful handgun cartridge that was developed to bridge the gap between the 9mm Luger and the 45 ACP. It imparts massive kinetic energy into its targets at the cost of punishing recoil, increased handgun wear, and the increased potential for overpenetration."

Sounds good for bears. I've shot 40 cal and the others but not 10mm.
