Re: Thoughts on a Marlin/Glenfield Model 60?

The tube magazine is kinda useful on a Marlin 60 but certainly a personal thing over the convenience of a removable box mag. What I found on older Marlin 60’s was the flimsiness of its hammer “rabbit ears” design which tended to crack off and lose parts of itself with age. Not a problem on all 60’s but something to pay attention to in older, pre-80’s rifles. Can replace the hammer with a modern design if necessary.

There are far less accessories for the Model 60 than the 10/22. The 10/22 and M60 were direct competitors for over 40 years. The 10/22 "won" but there are 11 million model 60's... You don't get to that number by making a shit gun...its a great little rifle. I'm actually in the market for one. The Model 60 was the first rifle I ever bought with my own money.

If you want to heavily accessorize, then go for the 10/22. I happen to like the M60 just the way it is, and out of the box I like the M60 much better than the 10/22. These days 10/22's tend to go much cheaper than an M60, but back in the day the M60 was always the less expensive of the two.

I'm looking for one like the one I bought when I was 16 years old. The Glenfield with the Squirrel stock.

I had one many years ago(40?). The stock was a softer wood with impressed "checkering", with I think a squirrel and some lines. That's about all I can remember that might serve to date it. Sat unused for a long time and got about 20 dollars toward a Ruger 77-22 All Weather from a gun store owner who really didn't want it. Some years later, it was still in his store.
I ordered a case of optimism from Amazon, but porch pirates beat me to it. Still, chin-up.

They are going for about $250 + on gun joker depending on condition of course. It wasn’t too long ago that you could get one for around a bit more than a hundo. If you are in the 200 range I’d say that’s a good deal & I’d probably snatch it up.

The ones in very good to mint condition are running closer to $400. I have been watching them for a while and they're not going cheap. Although, in the past month I have noticed prices on some guns I have been watching coming down...hopefully the M60 will be one of them. I don't own a semi-auto .22 and I want to add one just for friends and their kids to shoot when we go out shooting. I actually own a good half dozen guns I keep purely for other shooters, I haven't touched them in years.

I would say it is a good $150 gun to keep around. But having owned one it didn’t really get shot that often, more like a novelty gun to me. Still, better than no gun at all.

When I reach for a .22, its going to be one of my Winchester pump actions. Sorry, but nothing out-cools the Winchester pumps in my books. My interest in the Marlin Glenfield 60 is nostalgic. I had one when I was young, had a good deal of fun with it, and I'd like to shoot one again. Add to that, it's just a great shooting little .22 auto, so there will always be someone around my tribe who will pick it up.
