I finally got a hold of an old Savage 99 in .308. The scope was removed, but it has a Leupold mounting plate. I'm looking at the Vortex Crossfire II for around $150.
Are there better options for that sort of money? This would will be both a hunting and range toy. I don't want to spend $$$$ on a new scope that will be wasted on both my skills or the rifle, but need something practical that can withstand being hauled around the woods while still being accurate out to 500 meters at the most.
suggestions?
Re: old rifle, new scope
2In that price range, I would look for a used Redfield Revolution or maybe Leupold VX-1 in either 2-7x33 or 3-9x40. Either of those will get you out to 500 yards and more with aplomb. That Vortex Crossfire is made in Red China, with what one would expect of junk made over there. I'd avoid it.
If you must go foreign-made, then at least go with something made in the Philippines, where they actually have an idea how to build a decent riflescope at a reasonable price. Burris's Fullfield series would fit that bill.
