This has been an evolving story, but IIRC the asst principal totally sided with the mother. Instead of placing the child in a special education classroom where the child could have been better controlled, the mother wanted him in a regular classroom and the assistant principal allowed it. The mother promised that a family member would be in the classroom every day to control the child and the week when the mother and father weren't in the classroom, is when the teacher was shot. From an earlier post.
Zwerner [the teacher] first went to a school administrator between 11:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and said the student threatened to beat up a classmate, Toscano said. A second teacher went to a school administrator at 12:30 p.m. and told the administrator the teacher took it upon herself to search the 6-year-old boy's backpack.

"The administrator downplayed the report from the teacher and the possibility of a gun," Toscano said. A third teacher told an administrator shortly before 1 p.m., the boy showed a student the gun at recess and "threatened to shoot him if he told anybody," Toscano said. A fourth employee asked an administrator for permission to search the boy and was denied, Toscano said.
The school administrator was the assistant principal.
A former assistant principal at a Virginia elementary school should be held criminally liable after her “lack of response” and “poor decisions” allowed a student to intentionally shoot his first-grade teacher last year, according to a special grand jury report released Wednesday.
“Dr. Parker’s lack of response and initiative given the seriousness of the information she had received on January 6, 2023 is shocking,” the report says.

Federal law requires schools to place children in the least restrictive placement. This is often a point of confusion for on-site staff who rely on the district to provide guidance. My wife teaches at a middle school where several teachers have been assaulted by students and massive brawls are common. Onsite staff requested a resource officer, but the district denied it. Site staff are routinely overruled in suspensions by district higher ups. The special education classes were also disbanded and all students are "mainstreamed " with the general population. What's happening in schools right now is madness.

As a retired teacher, I understand the sometimes conflicting and nebulous dictates of a district or administration. However in this instance, I feel it was neglect that allowed the tragedy to happen.
Parker and other school officials already face a $40 million negligence lawsuit from the teacher who was shot, Abby Zwerner. She accuses Parker and others of ignoring multiple warnings the boy had a gun and was in a “violent mood” the day of the shooting.

--snrps--

Newport News police have said the student who shot Zwerner retrieved his mother’s handgun from atop a dresser at home and brought the weapon to school concealed in a backpack.

Again, we see a poorly stored weapon as being the real main cause of the tragedy.

CA teachers and their unions need to start electing new state politicians like the governor and state superintendent of schools and state legislators, who can change things up. If you reelect the same old politicians then nothing changes, their first priority is getting reelected.

More on the VA case.
During the 2021-2022 school year, the child exhibited many behavioral problems, according to the grand jury report. In an incident on Sept. 27, 2021, the child allegedly choked his kindergarten teacher “so hard she couldn’t breathe,” the report says. Over his kindergarten year, the boy also would occasionally hit a counselor, kick and spit on a teacher assistant, and brag about smoking his mother’s marijuana, according to the report.

But administrators at the school failed to initiate a “Functional Behavioral Assessment or Behavior Intervention Plan” during this time despite school counselors having to frequently help the boy’s kindergarten teacher with his behavior, the report says. Instead, administrators sent the child back to preschool at a different school.

Several security issues were also not addressed or were dismissed by administrators – including the school building’s door buzzer system that was broken for weeks before the shooting and later slowed down police response, according to the report. On the day of the shooting, the report accuses Parker of ignoring multiple warnings that the boy was carrying a gun and that he had been in a “violent mood.”

Seems there’s more wrong here than just a kid getting their hand on a parents gun. That didn’t help of course, but there were a series of events that should have prompted a more serious response from the people around this child that could have stepped in and should have. Obviously the child should have been removed from his home environment long before this happened.

Well you won’t fix things like this with new gun laws or even punishing the parents. Someone has to be able to make the call when a child has become a danger to others

The teaching workforce is shrinking due to retirements, low pay and burnout. Fewer students are pursuing a career in teaching due to cost and other factors. A teacher shortage is affecting schools across the nation, but it's especially bad in California.

As one STEM student I recall said, why would be want to go into teaching, there is a long process in getting your degree controlled by the state education authority, you have to pass exams on top of your degree, the pay is low and you can be laid off when the school district has budget problems. States with the highest teacher shortages are Nevada, Utah and California. A country that many regard as ideal has a terrible teacher shortage and there is no tuition at their universities, it's Sweden.

WARREN, Mich. (WXYZ) — Warren police say an 8-year-old child is in critical condition after shooting himself in the face with what may have been an unsecured gun.

--snrps--

“I don’t believe the ambulance stopped for a single intersection. We got the kid down there in record time," Warren Police Lt. Greg Booton said.

Police are still investigating but say at this point, it appears the child found the gun and shot himself. Both of his parents and two younger siblings were home at the time of the incident.

The investigation will include whether the gun was safely and securely stored.

A 10-year-old Texas boy confessed he used his grandfather’s gun to fatally shoot a sleeping man in 2022, a week before his 8th birthday, according to the Gonzales County Sheriff’s Office.

The homicide investigation into the death of Brandon O’Quinn Rasberry, 32, who was shot once in the head in January 2022 at an RV park in Nixon, Texas, had gone cold until the child’s recent comments about a man he had shot and killed two years ago, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

--snrps--

After obtaining a pistol he found in the glove box of his grandfather’s truck, the child told investigators he entered Rasberry’s RV, according to the release.

--snrps--

The child told investigators he saw Rasberry sleeping, approached him and fired a shot, striking the man once in the head, according to the Gonzales County Sheriff’s Office.
https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/20/us/texas ... index.html

The glove box apparently was not locked, and the kid put the gun back after the shooting.

Secure your unsupervised guns, folks.

Here is yet another example of irresponsible gun use by adults that resulted in a kid shooting by accident that very same guy.
A Virginia man is in critical condition after being shot by a 2-year-old, police said.

According to the Chesterfield County Police Department, the unidentified man was about to leave the house Monday morning and had "placed his handgun on a nearby chair."

The toddler retrieved it and "accidentally discharged the firearm, shooting the victim," police said.

Police said the man was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition.
https://abcnews.go.com/US/man-critical- ... =112995896

Let's ask ourselves why we might be seeing this reduction in the most unfortunate happenings.

One moment of lapsed attention sends the guy to the hospital in critical condition. It is never a mistake to send or to ask for prayers under such circumstances.

When we talk about gun safety, this is one of the things we mean. Guns are special, and they require special attention. Be safe out there.
"Although it's an accident, you have to be careful. I'm a gun owner myself, but there is no way on God's green earth that I would want to put anyone's family through this. You all have got to secure your weapons. Have them, but secure them. Protect our babies. It's too many of our children dying here," Parks said.

--snrp--

The highest number of accidental shootings by children -- since the group started tracking these incidents in 2015 -- happened in 2021.

--snrp--

"Several states have recently passed secure-storage laws, which research shows make a huge difference in saving children's lives," Burd-Sharps said. "And the hope is that as these laws are passed, these unintentional shootings by children will continue to go down."

--snrp--

Safe storage laws are generally very popular. A 2019 survey from the American Public Media Research Lab found 78% of Americans either strongly support or somewhat support mandating locked gun storage.
https://abcnews.go.com/US/accidental-sh ... d=99797242

Why do we think these moments were highest in 2021? Well, we were locked down during COVID. Maybe. Or maybe it was the insistence on safe storage by some politicians. But I think the real reason is negligence by some gun owners. It does not have to be that way. Each of us can change our habits with respect to firearms. There is no such a thing as "too much safety" or "the inconvenience isn't worth it" when it comes to kids and guns. The life we save might be our own.

Be careful out there.

I said it in another thread, require safe storage for all gun owners with children under 18 living in their residence. No requirement for people without children or those whose children no longer reside at the same residence. I think it’s still nannyish since parents should be responsible enough to look after their children without the government telling them how. Also, this is not an issue of pandemic proportions not even close.

Exactly, but a law requiring safe storage needs to exclude households without children from the requirement. If parents want to protect their children from guns they have that ability right now. I know this will adversely affect the poor depending on what is considered safe storage. For me, we don’t need it, no children and none likely to visit.

In this discussion it would be beneficial to define the need. Why it’s needed. Who it should apply to. Creating blanket laws is ridiculous and an infringement.

I did not find that exact graphic on the Everytown web page. My first visit there so maybe I missed something. The page I did find seems to be using 1-17 as the age range for "children" and they are showing a higher number than in that big graphic above, though that does say they are only reporting for Jan - May of each year, which is kind of a weird cutoff range. The annual numbers seem to be closer to the 300-400 range.

If you want to look at it, here's the link to that page. https://everytownresearch.org/maps/notanaccident/

They also have a link to a more in-depth report they did in 2023 which talked a lot about safe storage laws and showed the rates of childhood shootings vs. type of storage laws on a state by state basis.

I am not promoting that site or their mission, just pointing to answers to questions that were raised about their methodology.

The shooting in the original post news article was not unintentional. Kid meant to shoot her.
