Upgrading to Win 10 From 8.1

1
Yeah so I'm running a touchscreen desktop with Win 8.1 with a terabyte of storage and of course the Microsoft Gods are not doing updates anymore. This is what happened last time I was running Win 7.
Thing is I had the option to get Win 10 free but do to all the issues with 10 I just blew it off. Cus 8.1 was running and still is running fine. I don't like changes.
So I pay $130 some bucks for Win 10 and it gets me a couple years down the road until maybe they can implant a PC in my brain.
I picked up a One Touch portable hard drive thats got 5 Terabytes to store all my shit on. Thats the lowest I think they sell. Heck I don't even have 25% of my 1T filled up. Craziness.
Oh, my kid thats a total computer nerd got me set up with some NiNite (Ninite.com) software program thats supposed to transfer all my stuff over to Win !0 with a click of the button.

Anyways the last upgrade went pretty good so I'm hoping this one will too. Any pointers will help immensely as my kid left town. , thanks.

Good one! :-D

Actually, tonguengroover, you might consider GNU/Linux for your next OS upgrade. Turns out certain distros like Ubuntu and Linux Mint are quite desktop- and tablet-friendly, including to newbies. This will give you several benefits.

1.) No more worrying about upgrades.
2.) No more begging Microsoft, "mommy, may I?" when you want to have your computer do what *you* want it to do.
3.) Saving of money

The third benefit is really a side benefit that just happens to be rather nice. Benefits #1 and #2 are really the key ones, and it's all about the freedom. I'm using Ubuntu right now to make this post, and I can do everything I need to do with a computer with GNU/Linux. It's great. Even my smartphone, a Purism Librem 5, runs a variant of Ubuntu (actually Debian, but very closely related). Works a treat and preserves my freedom.

Well now, just rope 'n' hawgtie 'em! Them thar cattle'll git-along if ya whip 'em just raaght. :-)

I think, though, there is a serious question that you're asking, and that's, "how do I transfer my data over?" I'd use a nice, big USB thumb drive, or an external USB hard disk, and copy all my data over there. Then, once that Unik thang's on thar, just copy 'em back over. It actually works out pretty well.

Hey, be glad I suggested GNU/Linux instead of FreeBSD...you know, the one whose mascot is the Prince of Darkness!

Win 10 is approaching it's life span (3-4 more years maybe?). Should have gone with 11, but it won't allow upgrade on old MB's/Processors. Unless you have some Win specific software, better off ditching and going with Linux. I have Ubuntu on two of my older Win 7 upgraded to Win 10 but not Win 11 cause MS says no. Screw 'em! Only reason I have a Win system is for one specific program I use for finances and money tracking. Ubuntu/Linux has a similar program for free, but too lazy as of now to pursue to see if would replace that I now use in Win. MS screwed me over once too often. Good chance I'll never own a Win 11 machine. I have one miniature unit I use in my entertainment center which has Win 10, but not upgradeable to 11 by AWOW - it's about 4" sq x 2" deep, SSD 256GB bought for $250 - if I ever move to 11 it will be with another of these since newer PC towers and lappy's all have no accessories and must have USB plug ins for peripherals. Computer progress has taken me back to where I was 20 years ago - need a docking station - so much for progress.

I'll also endorse Linux Mint...

The company I worked for would scrap computers every three or so years as part of the hardware refresh cycle - they'd keep the hard drives, and put the rest in a recycle bin; I scavenged a half-dozen or so over time, then put in a SSD, loaded Mint on them, and gave them to friends needing computers. Everyone has found Mint useful, and no one has taken me up on a offer to install Windows should they dislike Mint.

Just about every mainstream Windows application has a counterpart in Linux, and can work with MS file types - LibreOffice can read & write Word files, GnuCash can sub for QuickBooks, etc.

As mentioned before, using USB storage to backup / restore data is easy; take the opportunity to review / organize / clean up your files, too.

Dang, never thought of saving my old VAIO for that. I loved that machine.

This GNU/Linux is all Greek to me. I could prolly deal with it if I had time to learn a new OS and also lazy.

Pretty certain I don't want a laptop. I like Yuge screens, touchscreens as well. There's a couple at Costco, one I like and they have newest chip in them. Now that I got a new 5TB portable drive > I think I could get the Library of Congress on it. All in one desktop at Costco has the 2th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-1255U (10-core) Processor which I'm not sure how old it is. Seems like its not very new.

I had Windows 10 and I was offered Windows 11 at no cost. I looked at and read reviews on W-11 and eventually downloaded it. No major problems and I've adjusted to the minor differences between 10 and 11. It's about change which brings added safety and security when browsing, that's a good thing.

Security monitoring is a terrific use of older, otherwise inefficient computers. The VAIO runs with a large monitor, and wireless keyboard and mouse. I also have a Logitech wireless kybd and mouse for my rig that with a single button push can talk to the VAIO as well, so I don't have to move to different kbd & mouse.

My portable is a Surface Go, MS's smallest Surface. When I can, I run it, too, with separates and it just sits closed. I travel with it and it does about 95% of what my desktop can do, but not always as quickly. I rarely use it with its detachable keyboard and touch pad.

The Ubuntu computer that I'm using is an AMD FX-8320 8-core from 2014. Yes, that means this computer is at least 8.5 years old. Continues to run very well and very fast. That may well have to do with the fact that it has 32GB of DRAM in it and an SSD. :-) Folks, processor speed is only a part of performance. The bottleneck generally is input/output (I/O). GNU/Linux doesn't tell me, "oh, your computer's too old to run X version, so sorry, go buy a new computer." The fact that Microsoft OS's are programmed to refuse to install on "older" hardware is just plain crapola.

About the only thing I might consider doing to it is upgrading the video card to play the really high-res videos out there now, since I'm making reloading videos again. Other than that...no reason to upgrade.

Like I said, it's about the freedom to do what *you* want with *your* computer. That's what Free Software gives you, that freedom.

Fuck Steve Jobs.
Sounds like me and my fam, but only with phones and tablets. All the desktops and laptops are Windows, I do have an iPad mini as does my wife--it's my 3rd iPad. I simply have yet to see a better tablet even though you're stuck in "The Gilded Cage". But it's small, light and can do about 80% of what my Surface can do.
I do have a hand-me-down iPhone and Apple Watch--I'm the 3rd owner of each. But my Galaxy S10e and my Garmin 645 Forerunner are my mainstays. Too bad they don't make the 645 anymore--I got it with a faux rose gold bezel, and installed a proper black metal band so it looks like a grownup watch, not a plastic sports watch, but functions really well as one. I have limited use for the iPhone and Apple watch. My wife had it with a pretty blinging case and band. When she upgraded she got a similar case and band, but I took off the bling and put a more simple protective case and paracord band on it. Just for fun.

But i'm the only one in the family using Android...far prefer it to IOS.

Have never owned an Apple anything and never will. Bad enough putting up with MS BS without adding Apple proprietary BS.

So much hate for inanimate objects, intangable software and billionairs we'll never meet. When I did electrical work, no one cared what products we put in the walls so long as the lights came on when the switch was flipped. I don't like Eaton breakers, back-wire devices, or NM staples.

Can anyone tell what brand of phone the person on the other end is using? You may (probably do) have aluminuim wire in your home and not know it.
