We tend to forget that there really are some stunning examples of small caliber pistols causing immediate stops. The Reagan incident as well as Bobby Kennedy come to mind as a couple well publicized examples during my life time.
Some old or pot metal 25s might get beat up by this BB ammo but I suspect that more modern Berettas should handle it fine.

Especially with 22lr and 25 I’d recommend a mag dump over a double tap if a BG is very close. If one or two or three rounds miss or glance off the skull or are stopped by the sternum the rest should get the job done.

An LCP II does that, but is snappy as hell to shoot in 380. If it came in a 32 auto instead, I'd have bought that over the 380. Mulling over the 22 caliber version.
The 22 holds more rounds and has about a third of the recoil. The slide needs to be racked quickly to eject dud rounds and it’s easy to accidentally engage the safety so you need to train your thumb to check that it’s off. Mine is quite reliable.

The Keltec P32 is very reliable with FMJ and it’s half the weight of most pocket 380s. HPs will sometimes rimlock.

See if you can find a .380 Beretta 80 series, S&W 380EZ, Ruger Security 380 or Walther PK380 or CCP M2 380 to try. Might be eye openers. The .380 is a very accurate and controllable cartridge and in the right gun really fun to shoot.
Seeing as another has already mentioned the Glock 42 as a mid-sized 380, I will add the Browning 1911-380 to your list.

Great gun, the Browning but it's still pretty big, even the compact version. It's even 'about' the same size a Glock 43X.

Well, no Glock I've ever tried has ever felt like anything but an useless brick in my hand so Glocks are simply out.
Sigh, 10-4...

Just to weigh in belatedly: My smallest pistol (not counting my wife's Sig290) is a Bersa 380CC. The sights are exceedingly small but I can point-shoot it OK at 3 to 5 yards. It's the only Bersa I've shot. The CC model has a different frame than any other Bersa/Firestorm 380, with a more curved backstrap. For me, it's comfortable to shoot. YMMV.

Pretty heavy compared to a Glock 42, though.

I'm only killing paper and my self-esteem.
