Italians Vote In Election That Could Take Far-Right To Power

1
ROME (AP) — Italians voted Sunday in an election that could move the country’s politics sharply toward the right during a critical time for Europe, with war in Ukraine fueling skyrocketing energy bills and testing the West’s resolve to stand united against Russian aggression.
Publication of opinion polls is banned in the two weeks leading up to the election, but polls before that showed far-right leader Giorgia Meloni and her Brothers of Italy party, with its neo-fascist roots, the most popular. That suggested Italians were poised to vote their first far-right government into power since World War II. Close behind was former Premier Enrico Letta and his center-left Democratic Party.

Well are we going to see a repeat of Il Duce with a rightwing government in Italy? Remember Mussolini came to power before Hitler took over Germany. So the EU might just have a bloc of Rightwing authoritarian governments that don't care for democracy with Poland, Hungary, and maybe Italy. I sure I am leaving out some other EU countries.

It is a disturbing election, but it doesn't mean Meloni will be the next prime minister. Center-left media has already dubbed this election as Italy's return to fascism, but hyping it makes them money. Italy like all of Europe has multiple parties and Meloni's party might win more seats than any other party in parliament. but will she have enough seats to form a government? The Italian parliament is composed of the lower Chamber of Deputies and the upper Senate, though the prime minister sits in the Chamber. It will be up to the Italian president to appoint a prime minister after the election is certified.

ROME, Sept 25 (Reuters) - A right-wing alliance led by Giorgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy party was on course for a clear majority in the next parliament, giving the country its most right-wing government since World War Two.

Meloni, as leader of the largest coalition party, was also likely to become Italy's first woman prime minister.

Meloni, 45, plays down her party's post-fascist roots and portrays it as a mainstream conservative group. She has pledged to support Western policy on Ukraine and not take undue risks with the third largest economy in the euro zone.

Hope this isn’t foretelling what could be happening here in November.

Italy had Silvio Berlusconi 4 times as prime minister, he's a right wing media billionaire. He's 85 and after years of facelifts, he looks like a cartoon. His political party Forza Italia will win some seats. Matteo Salvini is a right wing politician who has been in a number of governments, he heads the Northern League party that will have seats. And now Georgia Meloni with her Brothers of Italy. Italian governments come and go. If Meloni wins a plurality and forms a government with Berlusconi and Salvini, I expect they'll eventually get into a fight and the government will fall - too many big egos. We've heard the hype before about the return of fascism to Italy.

Sergio Mattarella the president is an experienced politician, he's 81 years old. He's still in office because parliament couldn't decide on another candidate and reelected him again. His predecessor Giorgio Napolitano had the same experience.

We have to see the final vote and the number of seats won by the parties in the Senate and Chamber of Deputies. It could be a challenge for the EU to stay united with Ukraine against Russia, especially going into fall and winter months with high energy costs. With high inflation worldwide, Italian voters were voting their wallets. Countries aren't static and political parties don't own public offices.

The center-right parties in Sweden won at the ballot box recently and are forming a new government. One British pound sterling is at US $1.07 and one Euro is less than a US dollar. The US dollar is very strong now which hurts our exports. I expect we'll see other political changes in countries especially in Europe.

Italy is a founding member of the EU and of NATO and the third largest economy in the EU. Georgia Meloni who is expected to be named prime minister supports NATO and supports Ukraine in their war with Russia. Silvio Berlusconi and Matteo Salvini favor Putin which is the first of their differences and we'll see if it eventually breaks up their coalition. They seem united on immigration, but we'll have to see how they deal with the EU Commission.

Italy survived four terms of Berlusconi as prime minister and he'd probably still be in office if he wasn't convicted of tax fraud. Margaret Thatcher was Britain's first female prime minister and was not loved by the left, there are still people who hate her guts for her union busting. The media hyped Angela Merkel's election as German chancellor, because she was born and lived in Russian controlled East Germany, but she was highly successful and was the linchpin of the EU. It makes no difference what gender, race or sexual orientation a politician is, they are still a politician focused on self preservation and getting reelected. The media has two emotions elation or depression, they make money with both.

Italy's far-right leader Giorgia Meloni has formally accepted the job of forming the next government at the head of the country's most right-wing administration since World War Two. She was greeted by President Sergio Mattarella, less than a month after her Brothers of Italy party won elections. Ms Meloni and her allies saw him earlier, and declared they were ready to govern "as quickly as possible". Italy's first female PM and her cabinet will be sworn in on Saturday.
Nato member Italy is the EU's third biggest economy and Ms Meloni has sought to assure its Western allies that nothing will change in its foreign policy. She made the short trip to the presidential palace in a white Fiat 500 car, before a private meeting with the president that lasted well over an hour. She then announced who would be in her cabinet. Her government will include Matteo Salvini's far-right League and the right-of-centre Forza Italia of Silvio Berlusconi - the 86-year-old former prime minister who for days has been at the centre of a row surrounding two leaked recordings that underlined his pro-Putin views and shook the coalition.
Mr Berlusconi, who is not in the cabinet, has nevertheless overshadowed its formation. Leaked audio of his pro-Putin remarks piled pressure on Giorgia Meloni, 45, who has long sought to emphasise her pro-Atlanticist credentials. In the first audio leak, he was heard boasting that Russian President Vladimir Putin had sent him 20 bottles of vodka for his birthday and called him "number one among his five best friends".

And off they go, we'll see how long this coalition lasts. Meloni's party dominates both chambers of parliament, but she needs Salvini's and Berlusconi's parties to make a solid majority. Meloni is expected to order a naval blockade of Libya to prevent migrants traveling to Italian ports and she's expected to take additional actions against migrants in the coming days.

Meloni's coalition may WELL go the way of Truss's in the UK. The fascist, Putin-loving senile Berlusconi wants Putin to take Ukraine and install a puppet government. He'd like an exit from the EU. Seems a lot like Trump and Musk. It may simply be impossible for Meloni to govern.

Yes, Italy definitely has turbulence ahead. Italy seems to always have problems with the EU, since it's the 3rd largest economy in the EU, Italy can't be ignored. Meloni is a supporter of Ukraine while her partners Berlusconi and Salvini support Putin, but Meloni's party is larger and she'd probably get support from center-left parties over Ukraine issues. If I was a betting man I'd bet that her government won't last a year. And Italy will again be thrown into chaos and President Mattarella will have to appoint another caretaker government.

Yup, pillars of most right wing parties are safety and security. In Europe and most of the world, red is the color of center-left parties and blue is the color of center-right parties, the US is odd. People in Italy were fearful for their families and center-right parties won all over Italy, just look at the map.

Sweden just swore in a center-right government and immigration and crime were also the major factors. Northern Sweden is rural, the main cities are in central and southern Sweden.

Racism in Italy is not new. Many Italians are fair and open-minded, but many are not. 20 years ago, my dad got sick in Perugia. The doctor said it was pneumonia (it wasn't--it was lung cancer) but he refused to deal with the only person they could find who was fluent in English and Italian--a Black woman.

But Italy, like Greece and Spain, is one of the closest places to North Africa to cross the Med, so refugees flood there.
