Bush Guns

1
These are my two what I call Bush guns. I cannot think of many others can work as easily in the bush and come on target being so short. Maybe some African Safari guns might. The No 5 Mk I is already sporterized from the factory. A tad heavier than the model 94 though.
There will pretty much take down anything in North America. But without exhorting to an '06 I think the .303 might be the perfect round to take down everything and anything in North America.
From what I've heard the .303 brit has taken down a lot of game in Europe and Africa as well. Pretty much midway between an '06 and a 30-30.
Any other bush guns out there you can think of?

We used to carry a Marlin .444 in south TX and places with large feral hogs when I was young. I’d imagine 45-70 would be about the same. But these were meant to take down a charging boar at short range, when you wouldn’t have much time to react. Really short in length, peep sight, quick to aim and fire. Plus it could still be used for deer with surprisingly little damage. But it was important for one of us to carry something along those lines when pushing through heavy woods.

Carried the same rifle along on long hunts & camping trips in the Rockies for similar reason, though thankfully never needed it.

30-30 sure was a nice cartridge in my experience (plus lever guns are just fun). I’ve never fired a 303 if my memory serves. And 30-06 was one of my general long range hunting rifles, probably my favorite rifle round.

For hogs in the bush I might then want an M1 carbine, full auto. Not a terrific cartridge to drop anything big. It's almost so small a cartridge as to just be designed to maim humans.
I'd like a .444 big bore rifle myself. Just as long as a 30-30 but fat!

Wouldn't that be the M2?

.30 Carbine is comparable in energy and penetration to the .357 out of a long barrel. Maybe more comparable to .327 Magnum when you consider the bore. I briefly considered a Blackhawk in it for my single-action shenanigans, but I was concerned about long term ammo availability. Rightfully, looking back. Local Cabelas has one again at a very reasonable price, but I think the Covid panic finally killed that cartridge.

Dang, you may be right. I just looked on Ammoseek and there are a few options, but none from a major legacy ammo brand. And starting at $0.85 per round vs $0.52 for FMJ .357 Mag or $0.63 for JSP (though I don't know how certain I'd be that those actually expand).

jeez, 30 cal used to be mere pennies a round when I had mine. Bulk left overs from Korean war.

Yes full auto was an M2 which was not select fire according to the video presented in this thread.

I ordered an original sling for my jungle carbine last night. Found a couple bayonets but my God they were like 300 bucks!

Yeah, like the Mosin or SKS, which made a lot more sense when you could buy 880 round spam cans for a dime a round. Now, I'd rather have a shiny new $500 Savage bolt gun in 7-08, roll my own and have fewer but better bullets downrange.

Howzabout an "Anti-Poacher" bush FAL? I got the build idea from a real one used in Africa.

Took just over a year to get everything together and built. Many hours.

7.62X51, a pleasure to shoot, even with that scary 20-round mag.

One of the standard brush gun “requirements” I’m aware of is can get shot accurately through brush. How does 7.62 handle that? Slow(ish) and heavy bullets are the solutions I know of.

Numrich has never been a reliable source of FAL parts. The usual suspects on FalFiles are the best bet.

The longest delay was being in line for that newly made English Walnut forend & grip

@Wooglin; 7.62 NATO has taken plenty 'things' thru brush, bush, steel, wood, eTc.

Whatever .30-'06 would do.

Frontsight…NICE!!! My older 94 30-30 is paired with a RugerOM 357. Between them they do everything I need them to do.
Fun combo for sure!

Well, the wooden items were made by a friend of mine, Dean. His commitment to FAL wood in English Walnut is very commendable, no?

Yes I like walnut. Kinda soft though as far as hardness goes.
