GPS Non Internet Service Dependent Maps

1
Recently upgraded to a new iPhone, I decided I could use the old as a camera. So I wiped out everything, but the camera and a few other programs that I figured were not internet dependent including the built in maps program. After the flat tire thread, I started thinking about all sorts of needs that I have. While my cell an iPhone is fully capable of being a GPS, I got to thinking about other uses for my old iPhone which no longer receives a signal. A GPS with a map program…LoL…which I had just deleted. To make it worse I couldn’t restore the old program back since it was totally gone and couldn’t airdrop it either. Internet search lead me to realize I might be able to airdrop a third party program, “Organic Maps”. So I downloaded it to my new iPhone and then airdropped it to my old phone. It appears it can still download some information. I can download maps after the program is installed. LoL. I’ve also found there’s attachments to iPhones that will make it a SatPhone. That’s for future ideas.

I have my Boy Scout compass and Orienteering Merit Badge book. I've all the topo maps in this region. And I'm walking distance from the brewery. I have not yet gotten one of those phones. I was forced to go to 4G, but I can't hook up yet for some reason. My future has become my present, so maybe I should get one of those 5G things that even cooks dinner for you. Thinking.

LoL. I’ve got those too and plenty of merit badges and awards to show I know how to use them. Never afraid to find a new technology to exploit though. Access to GPS is pretty damn convenient and saves me from carrying a thousand maps. Never hurt if something does your cooking! LoL.

I have a collection of those as well. LoL. In a car I certainly have more storage space, not so much on a motorcycle. I could see taking one regional map as well as an old fashioned handheld compass in addition. Still the idea of trying to make a device that could serve as a GPS map regardless and perhaps later also a SatPhone is intriguing. Being the emergency management section, the idea is worth considering.

I use the DeLorme Atlas and Gazetteer. It has the roads and topo lines, although at a smaller scale. It covers an entire state and shows every road, not just the main ones. It also has info about camping hiking, hunting, fishing, parks, Wildlife management areas, and boat ramps.

I was reading this and thought back to how much of an anachronism I've become these last maybe three decades. I mean, I'm still amazed at how much more efficient my compound bows are than my recurves. But I still cleave to recurves, as the compounds aren't much of a challenge any more closer than about thirty yards. And I was thinking how my single action revolver is my favorite hand gun. Like sitting on a park bench watching the people go by faster and faster. Just fantastic. I know by sound how to adjust dual SU carburetors on a two-liter 1962 TR-4. Not much call for that these days. Just a great, great ride, though. This one and the TR-4.

I sympathize with that though. I don’t throw stuff away that can be used. I have old full proof tech and new. I generally like the old, but I can embrace new rapidly. My Triumph Thruxton also has dual carbs, I’m more mechanical in my approach, I count the turns. 😂.
