It’s a tragic event with a cascade of bad decisions from people that should have known better. Control points in schools don’t do any good if someone opens the door. Holding back the only armed response on site is hyper stupid.

Not gonna happen anywhere in the US, via any Federal law. Just ask the bozos lapping at the NRA slop trough in Houston...assholes like TOT saying, 'the left wouldn't have prevented this tragedy'....pretty obvious the GOPathetic wouldn't either.

Missed warning signs

Following a spate of mass shootings in Texas, the Uvalde school district invested in social media monitoring, campus police, and teacher training to prevent future tragedies.
Despite the Uvalde school district investing tens of thousands of dollars in security and training for an active shooter in recent years, no school police officer was on the scene when Ramos arrived on campus. This even though two months before the shooting, officers practiced their response to just such an incident, and officials said at the time it was the latest in several active shooter trainings.
Once Ramos was inside the school, officers made a crucial tactical error and temporarily considered the active shooting stage of the incident over, believing a barricaded standoff would begin instead. As a result, a group of as many as 19 officers stood in a hallway outside the classroom where Ramos was inside slaughtering students, waiting for backup and tactical equipment. Even once elite reinforcements with gear like ballistic shields arrived, there were delays. Members of the Uvalde Police Department temporarily kept the elite team of Border Patrol commandos who ultimately killed Salvador Ramos from entering Robb Elementary School, The New York Times reports, citing unnamed government sources.
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/worl ... 89296.html

Kids were inside frantically calling 911 begging for help. Meanwhile parents were complaining, getting tased and handcuffed, because of the incompetence of the incident commander and authorities. This will go down with Columbine because of the incompetence of police but the media is harping on guns. Hope the rest of the world learns from our mistakes.

“Y’all keep fighting with us, go fight that motherf***er!” one person can be heard yelling at officers in video from the scene.

In another, a livestreamer can be heard saying that it had “already been about an hour and they still can’t get the kids all out”.

“That’s f***ing crazy, bro, they’re standing all outside, there’s f***ing kids in there still, man,” he said.

“You’re scared of getting shot? I’ll go in without a vest, I will!” one mother told an officer.

It's not lost on me that nearly all dead are Mexican heritage - the very group that Abbott/cohorts and repubs have declared war on at the border, in schools and voting rights. Abbott/cohorts are advocates of no CRT and believe the "replacement" theory on immigrants. Watching Abbott's press conference yesterday, if I could have bitch slapped that dickhead I would have. Watching the news conference the day of the shooting with all the smug fucks that represent Texas in one location was almost enough to cause a maggot to puke.
I've spent a lot of time in the area, both personally and business wise. Married for awhile to a young lady from La Pryor just up the road from Uvalde. My old corp. employer had a large deer lease there. Almost lost my right big toe in that area after stepping on something in Frio river whist skipping school in late 50's. Long distance dated some girls who lived in Uvalde. Had some business interface during 90's with Dolph Briscoe (former Gov. back when Texas had sane governance), very nice man. Leonard Slye (aka Roy Rogers) hunted on our deer lease - his wife Dale Evans was born in Uvalde - another nice man. Mexicans are the heart and soul of south Texas, but have always been held as second class citizens, screwed over and crapped on for as long as I've been aware (approx. 67 years). Why they would even consider voting repub is a total enigma to me, but they do. Just one more thing I do not understand. You'd think at my age and by now I'd have an inkling of understanding, but I'm just as confused as I was when I was 13. In the mid 60's to early 70's, I probably spent as much time in northern Mexico as I did south Texas. There are no more gracious people in the world than Mexicans I grew up with and have ever met - state side or in Mexico. This Uvalde slaughter is almost more than I can bear. It HAS TO STOP!!!

Wino great Post.

Most people don't realize that Uvalde is almost 82 percent Hispanic and you can bet that the majority of the hispanic population is related to one of the children that died, wounded, or was in that classroom. I have worked with and nursed Hispanics and I have found the vast majority of them are very family oriented. This has to be very devastating to them. Unfortunately, nothing will change. We have seen this after the other school shooting from Columbine to Buffalo to now Uvalde.

BTW I knew a retired Texas Ranger that Dolph Briscoe appointed as a game warden on the Briscoe ranch in south Texas. That old man could tell some stories. about the days of Bonnie and Clyde along with other criminals in Texas.

Yes Wino.
Being a native Tucsonan I grew up next to some great Mexican families.
My wife is half mexican/spanish.
Some of them want to pretend they are not Mexican but Americans and like her mom will never speak the language in the presence of others unless it's otherwise impossible to communicate.
Weird I know.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott faced jeers and boos when visiting Uvalde, Texas, on Sunday. In the aftermath of the shooting that left 19 students and two teachers dead at Robb Elementary School on Tuesday, the governor and other Republicans received criticism for their opposition to stricter gun laws and regulations that advocates say could prevent further mass shootings.

Abbott traveled to Uvalde to meet with President Joe Biden. However, when the Republican governor arrived, some residents vocalized their frustrations about what they see as a lack of action from the state government.
"We need change, governor," one man could be heard shouting amid the boos, while others could be seen giving him a thumbs down.

The man continued pleading: "Our children are under constant attack in this community. We need help." Meanwhile, another voice could be heard shouting, "Shame on you, Abbott," according to Reuters.

The Justice Department announced Sunday that it will conduct a critical incident review of the response by law enforcement to the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

The review, which is being undertaken at the behest of Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin, is tasked with providing "an independent account of law enforcement actions and responses that day, and to identify lessons learned and best practices to help first responders prepare for and respond to active shooter events," Justice Department spokesman Anthony Coley said in a statement.

McLaughlin in a statement Sunday night thanked the Justice Department for accepting his request, adding "I trust the assessment will be fair, transparent and independent."

Former NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton says it is “mind-boggling” how much Texas authorities mishandled last week’s school massacre. “I’ve never seen anything like it in all my years of policing,” Bratton said during an appearance on WABC 770’s “The Cats Roundtable” that aired Sunday. “I have so much anger at the moment at how mishandled this has been.”

Bratton — who has twice served as the Big Apple’s top cop — said he was stunned that local Texas cops waited so long to enter Robb Elementary School on Tuesday while 18-year-old Salvador Ramos was inside killing 19 fourth-graders and two teachers. “To be hearing that some of those lives might have been saved. But a wrong decision was made apparently by a police chief with a six-person police force that was put in charge of the response to this horrendous incident,” he told radio host John Catsimatidis. “It’s mind-boggling and frustrating.” Bratton, who also headed the Los Angeles and Boston police departments, said Texas authorities failed to adopt active-shooter guidelines that came about after the 1999 Columbine High School mass shooting in Colorado.

“We learned a lot … from the Columbine tragedy many years ago,” he said. “Apparently, unfortunately, with how it seems to be shaping up, the officer in charge, the incident commander in this incident in Texas effectively after all the things we learned about this type of incident, he basically didn’t implement them,” Bratton went on. “He opted to keep those 19 officers outside the classroom.” Meanwhile, “the misinformation that’s been put out by government officials in Texas is mind-blowing,” too, Bratton said.

Greetings Folks! I am new to this forum. I have never posted before. I was an elected member of the Washington State House of Representatives as a Democrat for 14 years. Been a hunter and gun owner most of my life and also worked in law enforcement for over 25 years. I do not see the two as mutually exclusive. Most of my liberal and Democratic friends are either getting or thinking of getting guns these days. This is something new. I was concerned that many will be uninformed gun owners, which you will all know to be a bad thing. I am big on gun safety and tactical proficiency. I just wrote a book called, "Shooting Liberally - A Gun Guide for Democrats & Independents in a Time of Political Division". I have no idea if anyone will be interested in it, but I think it has some good ideas. It is on Amazon and Barns & Noble. If anyone has a chance to take a look at it, I would love to hear any feedback. Also, I don't really know how to post on this site and am just answering this former post, so probably got it wrong. Can someone tell me how to make a new post properly? I could not find the instructions and don't know anything about posting or blogging. Not much of a computer guy. Three Democratic-led states — California, New York and New Jersey — have pressed forward with gun reform legislation in the wake of the deadly shooting in Uvalde, Texas that left 19 children and two adults dead.
In California, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) announced on Wednesday, just one day after the Texas shooting, that the state would “expedite commonsense gun safety laws that will protect people from gun violence.” Newsom committed to signing a package of bills, including restrictions on the sale of firearms to minors and so-called ghost guns, or unlicensed kits to build untraceable firearms.
Meanwhile, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) has pressed for state legislators to raise the minimum age to purchase an AR-15-style rifle to 21, from the current limit of 18. “I don’t want 18-year-olds to have guns,” Hochul said at a meeting of the Interstate Task Force on Illegal Guns, which includes law enforcement representatives from nine states.“I want to work with the legislature to do something that is far more common sense than we have right now. At minimum, the AR-15s, but I’m going to take a look at everything,” she added.
In New Jersey, Gov. Phil Murphy (D) has pressed for similar changes in his state. In remarks on Wednesday, Murphy urged action on gun reform in the state, including on a package he proposed. “I introduced the comprehensive Gun Safety 3.0 package over a year ago and this moment demands that the Legislature finally take action,” he said, adding that the “proposed laws are hardly revolutionary.” The package of reform policies would also raise the minimum age to purchase long guns to 21, ban .50 caliber firearms and close the loophole for importing out-of-state firearms, the governor’s office said.

Newsom and Hochul are running for election and whoring for votes.

Here’s a good article about what happened at Uvalde and the police actions. Also questions what are the police really for since by statistics they really don’t stop crime.
… Matter of fact, police departments across the country do as much to influence public opinion as they do “crime fighting.” Their influence is so great the public finds it completely understandable when cops refuse doing their jobs in the face of mere scrutiny. It’s so strong cops can get away with murder on account of murder being seen as a tragic but sometimes necessary response to the dangers of facing an infestation of criminals and crime. It’s so huge few complain about Uvalde’s cop shop sucking up 40 percent of the town’s yearly budget.

The influence of American police departments on public opinion is deeply rooted in the reason cop shops exist – yes, to “protect and serve,” sometimes, but more often to serve as the last line of defense against democratic forces threatening to flatten the old orders of social and political power. Cops are white power incarnate.…

I personally will be interested in 'Shooting Liberally,' having done so for like sixty years.

Actual gun safety is easy to support. Let's do it.

Yup. Armed revenue enforcers. “We the people”. have gotten to the point where the militarization of the police is clearly a danger to not only to communities, but the republic. That’s not to paint with too broad a brush - many local police departments are effective & accountable to the citizens they serve. Others are rife with corruption, white supremacy, and are basically armed agents of authoritarianism. My feeling is we have too many of them & too many jurisdictions.

sig230 wrote: Thu May 26, 2022 2:26 pm The solution is the same that it has always been.

What needs to be done is simple.

First, get rid of all of the mega-schools, put schools back in the neighborhood and small enough that every teacher knows every student by name and no class has more than a dozen kids. But that means no big football stadium. And smaller classes mean more teachers and that means higher taxes.

Second, start active discipline at the earliest stages. If a child is a bully or disruptive then the child gets sent home and provided true counseling. But there is no one at home and both parents (when there is two parents) are working and won't get paid so can't come home.

Third federalize drugs and provide them for free in neighborhood health clinics. But the WAR on DRUGS!

Fourth enact universal health care. But if that happens the drug companies will all stop researching cures. After all no other country makes medicines.

Fifth stop glorifying violence and shooting. But John Wick and Reacher...

Sixth, bring back shooting sports in the middle and upper grades. What, teach kids to shoot?

Seventh, support unionization and narrowing the gap between rich and poor. Make a two income family a choice rather than necessity. But that's SOCIALISM!

And understand that it took about fifty years to screw stuff up this much so it will take another half century or more to fix it.
There is something to chew on. Thank you for posting that. It is too bad that is the only example of something productive in this thread, though there are more than enough posts about takings being the answer. This shooting would not have been prevented by universal background checks, people.

Lawyer for Uvalde teacher contradicts key detail from official police account of shooting

In the days after the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, that left 19 students and two teachers dead, news reports echoed police claims that the shooter entered the classroom where he killed all his victims through a door that was left propped open by a school teacher.

Now, according to the San Antonio Express-News, the teacher's lawyer says she closed the door shut after she was informed an active shooter was on the loose.
Video showed her closing the door. Read more here.
