I’ve been thinking of divesting out of the caliber completely. The thing is I’ve done it before; and I came back when it’s dirt cheap. I’m down to 2 9mms & I don’t reload the caliber. I’ve sold off and traded a few during the pandemic & I never miss a generic 9mm.
I actually like my S&W M&P 2.0 c - it’s a great shooter. I’m just moving to mostly .45 (colt & ACP) as I load it and shoot it just as well. Plus, it’s would be at least $300 to “upgrade it for suppressor use.” I think better to sell it and buy one already so configured.
My other 9mm is a hi-point carbine. And the only reason I’m disinclined to sell it is that it was a Private party sale & it is fun to shoot/plink with when 9mm is cheap. I haven’t shot it once since the pandemic started. I also have a 4595 (.45 ACP one as well) and I shoot that one a lot more. Plus my gunsmith says he can thread it for a suppressor, which would be relatively inexpensive mod.
What say ye? I’m not in a place where I “need” to sell off guns, and they are definitely down from their peak prices. However a bit of extra proceeds would be nice for some future projects.
I feel like I “should” have at least one 9mm - being that it’s the most common handgun round. … but that didn’t help me at all these past 2 years.

Re: Get out of the 9mm Caliber?
2Sorry. Never sold a gun yet or divested from a caliber regardless of how little I shoot it. Good to have and keep at least a few boxes of ammo.
Re: Get out of the 9mm Caliber?
3Ye says no. Good to have a pistol and rifle of same caliber. Plus 9mm is the most popular caliber around should SHTF easier to find ammo

4I'm considering devolving my accumulation and the 9mm Parabellums would be the most likely candidates to find forever homes.

Re: Get out of the 9mm Caliber?
5Sure, go for it.
Course, I've been looking at getting into 9mm for the past year or so. Not enough to pull the trigger, but since I didn't reload pre-pandemic, the price differential vs. .45 over the past two years would pay off fast. Or it would if I shot less .45, and since the primary appeal of .45 is "it's more fun to shoot," I smell the logic of someone trying to justify the next purchase. Other reasons include learning the DASA trigger, having a more reliable bottom-feeder, and having a more conventional centerfire option for training. Weighing against - I could do all that in .45 just as easily, and save the money I otherwise would have spent on stocking a new caliber.
Philosophically, I think hoarding is bad. Unless it's books. Books are an exception. Or good liquor. Good ammunition at low prices. Consistency is overrated. 9mm is always practical, but. does it spark joy?

6Not as much as a good .45 colt lever gun or revolver, that’s for sure.wings wrote:9mm is always practical, but. does it spark joy?

Re: Get out of the 9mm Caliber?
8You can send me all your 9mm stuff if you want.
While I haven't followed the suggestion to have a pistol AND a rifle in the same caliber, I'm only stocking three calibers (well, four, if you count .223 and 5.56 as separate calibers). All my pistols are 9mm. The two AR-formats are obvious, and the lever action is .22LR.
When I started gathering pistols, the initial focus was on home/self defense, so having them all use the same ammo simplified things (indeed, since the majority of my pistols are CZ P10-series plus the P07 and P09, all the big magazines will work in lower-capacity guns). I haven't thought very hard about adding another caliber, except maybe .38 Special in a revolver, and the price per round for .38 Special is way more than I want to pay to get into that caliber these days.

Eventually I'll figure out this signature thing and decide what I want to put here.
Re: Get out of the 9mm Caliber?
9Read through. If you're going to keep the carbine might as well keep a handgun, a fun one. It's really common ammo, so don't let that slide. Me, I'm not too worried, as I found a couple more rounds in the left hand bottom of the range bag for the handguns I have.

Re: Get out of the 9mm Caliber?
10I’m a big fan of rifle/pistol ammo pairs. I’m almost irrationally drawn to them.
I have pairs in the following calibers: .357, .45 ACP, 9mm, .45 colt.
The holy grail for me would be a carbine that accepts M&P mags.
If I was a Glock guy I’d have a Ruger PCC for sure. (I’ve gotten rid of all my Glocks over the years.)

11Sell both 9mm’s then purchase a Ruger PC carbine and Glock 19 so you can not only share ammo but also magazines.
Yes that’s more expensive but I guarantee it will spark joy... And you deserve the best. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, son!

I don’t load 9mm because it would take away small primers from my supply of calibers I prefer to shoot (.38/.357). All the small primers I have purchased were at a good, pre-pandemic price and my replacement cost is now at least double. (Still cheaper than factory loads however) So I’m getting miserly about using them.
But you are right, all I would need are some bullets (and/or bullet molds) and a set of dies.

Re: Get out of the 9mm Caliber?
14I was going to buy 500 rnds of 9mm just now but still high at 60 cent? Less for steel case. Don't like steel.
Still waiting for a ruger max 9 and maybe a bulpup of some variety.

15Ya need to do some searching..Brass 9mm FMJ is everywhere around here..Cabelas, Bass Pro, Murdocks, Sportman's Warehouse..and all 'about' $.36 per round.tonguengroover wrote: Sat Mar 19, 2022 1:48 pm I was going to buy 500 rnds of 9mm just now but still high at 60 cent? Re: Get out of the 9mm Caliber?
16I just saw those prices .37/rd at Cabela’s. Brass 9mm house brand “Herter’s” which I find pretty good. I debated buying some. When .45 ACP hits .40/rd that’s my buy point.

17I was just on ammo seek, seen it down to .26 cents but those are places you have to join or obscure ammo manufacturers and re-manufactured brass.

Re: Get out of the 9mm Caliber?
18UPDATE: so much for that idea. I just bought a set of dies (which are available now) and some lead bullets. I’m still concerned about my dwindling supply of SP primers.
You guys were right - silly to think about getting out of 9mm. I’ll start hunting down some hollow points bullets, too.
