Found my unicorn!

Honestly have not looked much, but finally ventured into my local Academy to see what they had. Found some .38 Special which I have not been able to find at stores for well over a year and a half! Also picked up some .22LR. Neither were at pre-panic prices, but I decided to get some anyway. The 38 Special is 158 grains Federal American Eagle velocity at muzzle 770fps, 758fps at 25 yards point of aim 0”, and 745fps at 50 yards with -2.9” drop from point of aim. The .22LR is 40 grain with target velocity 1100fps. I’ll have to see if their site gives more info on at muzzle velocity. I’m guessing it might be a bit higher. Not sure if I want to shoot in in the S&W Model 41 or not. It’s supposed to prefer near standard velocity ammo.

The Norma may be better suited to my long gun.

Nicely done. Congrats. In the various calibers I've shot it, I've found the Fed AE to be very consistent in velocity. I think .357, 38, and .45acp as I recall.

I might start visiting a few stores, just in case. What I’d really like is to see primer and powder hit the shelves again.

Wonder if that's inflated prices by the manufacturers or the retailer or both.
I’m thinking a bit of both. Once availability increases we might see a slight dip down. I’m not optimistic we will ever come down to previous prices. Hence my hope for reloading supplies.

The Shoot Point Blank chain recently had a special price on Ruger 5.7 pistols, but no ammunition in 5.7x28.

A week after the special was over, I found ten or fifteen boxes of Federal American Eagle in that caliber in the Academy Sports location a quarter mile from the Shoot Point Blank nearest my home.

I didn't buy either. I didn't buy the gun because I didn't feel need to buy an expensive rock, and I didn't buy the ammo because I don't have a gun that would use it.
Eventually I'll figure out this signature thing and decide what I want to put here.

Nice score, sikacz. Fair warning - I have never shot any .22LR as dirty as the Norma Tac-22. If I don't alternate mags with plated ammo, I start getting FTEs in my MkIV. I've heard the 41 tends to be extremely finicky, so be prepared.

BearPaws - I see my local Cabelas is selling the Ruger 57 for $599 right now.

I may just use the Norma either in the revolver or the bolt action long rifle.

Finding .38 Special has been tough for me. When I find it, I grab it. Most of what I'm buying is plated bullets in the 125-130gr range, These loads just aren't very accurate at all.

Federal American Eagle is a good factory round. My local range sells a lot of it, and it's good stuff.

I dont' know if you reload your own yet, but if you don't, I'd suggesting reusing that .38 Spl brass with an inexpensive reloading kit. The .38 Spl round is quite possibly the easiest round to reload, ever. It's certainly one of the most commonly reloaded.

Re: Found my unicorn!

I personally have found 150 gr. And up better for .38 special as well. The .357 seems to tolerate the lighter bullets accuracy wise, better.

I have
Also found that 125 gr LRNFPs do better if they are loaded on the hotter side of .38spl loads. (Not +P, but near the max load in the book.) which still makes them fairly anemic compared to a “full house” .357 Taffin load.

But in general, I stick to 150s & 158s for both.

Depends on the load and possibly the gun. Our powder-puff .38 Special load, using a 105gr LSWC, is actually pretty accurate out to 25 yards. That's as far as we've been able to test it. I suspect that due to the light bullet and lower sectional density, it would start tumbling about when a wadcutter would once you hit 50 yards with it.

For me Remington Thunderbolts are the dirtiest 22lr ammo. I have a few boxes I bought during a previous ammo drought. My pistols shoot ok with them, but I have to make sure to clean them after each range trip.

I have a press and pretty much all the equipment. In a pinch I could reload except I can’t find primers and powder. I’ve saved all my brass from all my range trips for the most part. I had plans years ago to start reloading. I missed the boat on getting the ingredients. Have plenty of spent cases in 38 Special, 9mm Luger, 7.62 Nagant, 7.62x54R(53R), and 32ACP. I have most of the dies for the above including the 7.62 Nagant and also dies for a .308Win which I have ammo for. I have some rifle bullets from Lapua. I will reload, it’s just a matter of when.

I remember thinking while walking in the ammo and reloading section of my local Academy just before the pandemic and panic that I should start buying the primers. I was looking right at them. I didn’t buy because at the time I had not decided which kind I wanted out of the variety on the shelf. Should have just grabbed any, at least I could have traded it if it was wrong. LoL.

I agree - they are the worst in my experience too. When I was kid they were the only ones my dad would buy because they were dirt cheap. (At least he took us shooting, though.)

Absolutely jam-o-matic & primer ignition fails all the time. Compare these to CCI or federal is night and day.

I didn’t even know that .22s could run smoothly because we exclusively shot Thunderbolts as a kid.

Right? I know I was getting federal white box for about six dollars per 50 rounds of 9 mm. I wish I would’ve bought 5000 rds instead of 1000 rounds I did buy.

Found them in store? I didn’t see anything at our local Cabela’s when I was recently there.

Yes. Actually a fair amount. Small pistol. Large pistol. Some magnum pistol primers.
