A .22LR is a good way to start shooting, no doubt.
The former "Miss B.H.C.", now "Mrs. B.H.C.", is recoil-shy. She's also noise-sensitive, so something like an AR-15, which has very mild actual recoil, does bark like a big dog. That big bark is what scares her. She assumes that the "bark" translates into "kill my shoulder", even though it doesn't. It's just that all semi-automatic rifles are loud like that by nature.
So, some years ago, I took her to the range. I brought my Ruger 10/22, which I affectionately call, "The Assault .22", since it's
Capable of Accepting a High Capacity Clip!
I gradually convinced her to try...THE RIFLE. And yeah, I was kinda hamming it up and setting her up. ;-) So, we're on the range, I've got a fully loaded 10-round 10/22 magazine, and I get ready to shoot...THE RIFLE. I look back at her and get a "this is gonna kick hard!" stance. She's naturally expecting the worst. And here's how things went.
Me: You ready?
Her: (nods her head)
Me, getting an even more "set" stance: You SURE?
Her, cringing: (nods her head)
Me: OK, HERE WE GO!
pew...pew...pew.........
I now look back at her with a grin....
Her: THAT'S IT??
Me, grinning full now: Yep!
Her: GIMME THAT!!!
I show her proper rifle stance, and she proceeds to put holes in the 8.5x11 target...at 25 yards. She done good. First time she's ever shot a rifle, too. She looks at me with a "you set me up, you scoundrel!" look, and I damned near lost my 10/22 that day, to her! She absolutely LOVED it!
I bought her a 10/22 for her birthday...to save mine! No, I am not joking.
