Trump actively recruiting senators to 'depose' Mitch McConnell as the GOP leader: WSJ

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, former president Donald Trump is working behind the scenes, trying to recruit a Republican senator to challenge Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) for his leadership position in the party.
Trump's relationship with the powerful Senate leader has been on the rocks for some time, and the president is still reportedly angry that McConnell did nothing to stand in the way of the certification of Joe Biden as the new president.
According to the Wall Street Journal's Michael Bender and Lindsey Wise, Trump is now trying to take down McConnell -- but is finding no takers.
"Mr. Trump has spoken recently with senators and allies about trying to depose Mr. McConnell and whether any Republicans are interested in mounting a challenge, according to people familiar with the conversations," the report states. "There is little appetite among Senate Republicans for such a plan, lawmakers and aides said, but the discussions risk driving a wedge deeper between the most influential figure in the Republican Party and its highest-ranking member in elected office."
Stating the split between Trump and McConnell has widened since Trump's election loss, the Journal is reporting, "The feud between the two men threatens to splinter the party when Republicans could be building momentum in their bid to recapture control of Congress next year. As polls have shown Mr. Biden's approval rating dipping below 50% this summer—a troubling signal for Democrats' political fortunes—the two Republican septuagenarians remain divided over how to tilt the balance of a 50-50 Senate back toward their party."
Asked for comment about Trump's overthrow overtures, an ally of the former president said it was a non-starter with him.
"Naw, I'm not going to get in that fight," remarked Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) before adding McConnell "is doing a good job."

Like that will ever happen. Maybe Looney Lindsey Graham might try but no other Repug senator has the balls to even try an unseat MoscowMitch from his throne.

It might not be obvious, but day by day TFG's influence is waning and shifting to other, smarter thugs than the Orange Catastrophe. They aren't making constant pilgrimages to Bedminster anymore, and actual tests of his power and popularity ain't looking good--the Cali recall and Saturday's non-event in DC.
But that doesn't mean the USA is on the brink of becoming a one-party state and fascist neo-theological dictatorship. Oklahoma is a prime example where they are completely violating separation of Church and State, defying Federal laws, imposing voter exclusions, etc.

I'm all for Moscow Mitch going bye bye. Hopefully replaced by a Dem or at least an anti-turd.

Let the Repugs have at it.
Anyone would be better than Mitch the Bitch, as it will take years of work to achieve his level of political slimey-ness. That would further reduce their effectiveness.

I don't know if any Repug Senator would be better. We could wide up with Looney Lindsey Graham that can't wipe his ass without TFG telling him how.

I also see it gradually slipping especially when no Congressional Republicans attended the protest last weekend in support of the Jan 6 rioters. He knocked out Gonzalez of MI who voted for his impeachment and isn't running for reelection and he's probably knocked out Liz Cheney of WY who also voted for his impeachment. Still there aren't a whole lot of Republicans flying off to Bedminster or Mar a Lago to pay him obeisance and kiss the ring. Republican politicians like Democratic politicians want to get reelected and Trump is in the wilderness whining, he's not in the WH. They're more focused on their states and districts and constituents.

This year and the next are important to both parties when the state legislatures reconfigure the districts for the state and federal legislatures due to the new census results. Here in Texas we are already seeing maps that dilute the Dems possibly winning some districts and solidifying the Repug candidates to win in the state legislature. Same will be happening for the US House of Representatives. Expect Gerrymandering to be the rule of the day.

Also happened to Ohio. Our “bi-partisan” Redistricting committee failed to achieve a map. We voted (in a plebiscite) for an Amendment to the OH constitution, In 2015 and still got a highly partisan and unfair map.

I'm seeing stories now about very liberal states like Oregon and New York deciding to screw the high road and gerrymander the living shit out of their maps now.
I like the high road, but it does leave one susceptible to skylining.

The only good thing about deposing Mitch as Leader is that I don't believe there's another Republican as good at being sneaky, arm-twisting, and full of parliamentary tricks. Some are meaner, but not smarter. And make no mistake: Mitch is a brilliant, if soulless opponent.
OTOH, if TFG REALLY fucks and force McConnell out of the Senate, his successor will be picked by DEMOCRATIC Governor Andy Bashear! Wouldn't THAT be sweet!?
