So I put a RDS on my AR, along with some Troy Ind. BUIS. I haven't had an opportunity to go to the range yet, but was hoping to see if I can get them both at least partially dialed in beforehand, so I bought a laser boresight. But now I realize that I would still need a clear line of sight of, say, 50 meters, to try to get them all in approximation until I can do some actual sighting in at the range. (I'm in the suburbs, and there's no clear line of sight that wouldn't put someone else's house downrange.)
Other than "hurry up and get to the range, fool," are there any suggestions for how to get started on this process? Ii.e., of having a hope of at least starting on the paper when I do go to get it sighted in.) Did I buy the boresight for nothin'?

3So doesn’t it matter at what distance I’m aligning them? Oh wait, you said windage, gotcha.

4I've been known to use a laser boresighter at dusk, pointing from my garage to a point on a neighbor's fence, across the street 50 yards distant.
Also, this points to a big advantage of co-witnessed sights. If you are sighted in with one (say, the iron sights that came with the AR) you can dial in a 1/3 co-witnessed red dot easily. Same with BUIS to red dot, etc.

7I don’t recommend doing it outdoors among houses in a populated area — people could see it and mistake the bore sight for laser aiming etc. Instead, do it at the longest distance within your house in a manner that doesn’t cause the laser to shine out through a window. As noted above, this should allow you to get the windage correct. If it’s a circle dot, aligning the bottom of the 65-68 MOA circle with the laser at 7 yards should get the dot fairly close to proper elevation at 50 yards, depending on the specific dot and the height of the red dot sight above the bore axis of your weapon. Next align the iron sights with the red dot. I think that if you do this, you should be able to get to a 50 yd zero fairly quickly at the range.
