Had to sub to New Republic

I sub to my local paper, and I sub to the Atlantic. Most of the right wing shit I see is shit, so I suspected I might be in a bubble. I hate bubble people. I read right wing shit in an effort to avoid being in a bubble. But I was unsatisfied. I wanted some actual intellectual rebuttal to my positions. Reading shit just showed me shit. The Federalist Society went full-shit. Many others, Heritage, and so on. All's that remained of the opposition of my formative years appears to be the New Republic So I subbed. I think Yankee Tarheel subs, but forget. So, here's to pricking the bubble.

I really don't think it's going to be one of those "win stupid prizes" things for me. As it so happened, they had a ten buck special for a year. Heck. I drink more beer than that before the eighth inning. So I risked. Let's see whether I regret.

Good for you! I was tired of living in an echo chamber and reading just sources that supported it, life is gray. An interesting article and a beer or G&T chaser is the best.

Are you and the Mrs planning a trip away from that smoke to spend a few days in fresh air?

Funny you should mention that. We'd planned two different campouts, even had a site reserved at Juniper Lake in Lassen Volcanic. Toast. Were going to go to Ft. Bragg. Hiway closed. So we watch old British crime dramas and eat ice cream.

Sorry the plans fell through, after the Camp Fire and now the Dixie Fire you folks have been through the wars.

Which British crime dramas are you watching, I'm an addict?

I happily live in my “safe space” of the Atlantic. I also regularly check out The Bulwark which is a center right “never trump” anti-crazy right site. To be fair, many of the bulwark’s writers are featured on the Atlantic, and I’m way more “right” (ie correct) on guns than any of them.

Agatha Christie is always good. A few more suggestions.

Whenever one of Jed Mercurio's Line of Duty rolls out everyone watches it, it's about an anti-corruption police team in the UK Midlands. He also did Bodyguard an edge of your seat drama about terrorists, a protection officer and a government minister, the highest viewed show in UK TV history. We're all waiting for the 2nd season.

Vera - I mentioned on another thread about a DCI (played by Brenda Blethyn) Northumberlandshire, England. [current time]
Shetland - Set in the Shetland Islands of Scotland, closer to Norway than London, sometimes it moves briefly to Glasgow. DI Perez and his staff solve crimes. [current time]
Grantchester about a bored vicar in that scenic town who teams up with the local police inspector to solve crimes. Grantchester is located next to Cambridge so the university is part of the stories. [50s and 60s time period]
Foyle's War set during WWII on the south coast of England. A chief superintendent and his sergeant solve crimes, capture spies...

The original series was Inspector Morse about a DI then DCI and set in Oxford, the university is very much part of that series. When that series ended, a new series Inspector Lewis started when his sergeant was promoted to inspector and more great stories. When the lead actor retired it ended. Another spin off Endeavour which is about Morse when he first started in the police service back in the 1950s, just waiting for the next season to roll out. Morse's first name was Endeavour but he never used it.

An older classic is Prime Suspect it's set in London about a female (Helen Mirren) copper who heads a murder team. There are 7 separate series about DCI later Superintendent Jane Tennison.

A great Swedish one is Beck about a murder squad in Stockholm, it's it Swedish with English subtitles.

I could go on and on. Nothing paranormal, sci fi or other craziness in the above, just catching bad guys and gals. If you can't find them on Youtube, search on Google to watch free online.

Endless entertainment. American heaven.

with respect to the OP about trying to find a semblance of the sane opposition--I can't see this devotion to the orange spirochete ending in any good way for his followers. The comparisons to Hitler are way off base. I mean, even Alex Jones is all, "Maybe he's a dumbass." His support can only shrink with every sanctioned lawyer, every documented lie, every exposed grift. Don't let the bastards grind you down. Have the patience of water, which will wait 100 years for the dam to give way.

I've read some ov3r there. I'm OK so far with the sanity I've read. They may be ripe for "root cause mitigation" with respect to the gun problem.

I once had a subscript for "The Nation" - too much tripe for me albeit I dress to that side. I get all the right wing shit I can handle from couple of gun sites without actually submerging myself in the slime pool with sub for RW mags.

As for entertainment - Netflix and Prime both have several Nordic series. I really like the Finn and Iceland tales.

I was checking out New Republic, didn't seem too off the wall like some crazy pro trumpian news sources.
Personally I can just watch FOX news for five minutes and confirm they are all assholes and don't care about anything except their pockets.
I don't need to waste my life anymore than I did when listening to Trump for four or five years every frikkin day!

I can't watch Fox News or listen to Fox on the radio, it's hyped headlines guaranteed to push buttons, a lot like CNN and MSNBC. Those networks no longer deliver straight news, it's a mix of news and opinion that is media spun. Reminds me of Paul Harvey with his groans. I like Bulwark too, they have some good writers. Reason occasionally has some good articles.

I reiterate - the best thing I ever did for my own well being was drop cable TV in early Jan. 2017. Antenna has been exceptionally good and prevents my viewing any cable news. I admit I do get snippets now and then on YouTube - like now - can't get enough of hearing about Lin and Sydney getting a stick up their buns. Highly recommend dropping cable just in cost savings alone. I watch nothing related to Fox local stations and never on YouTube - I'd be in the shower all day if I did, washing the slime off. Everytime I venture into right wing crap, I regret almost immediately.

I dropped cable in the early 2000s. The cable company wouldn't give me a choice of channels, so I cancelled it all. Haven't regretted it, I'd rather read articles. With streaming services we have more options.

Yup, the Scandinavians have come into their own with good crime dramas, Beck and Wallander are two of my favorites. I didn't care for Denmark's "The Killing", but I did like "The Bridge" which was a joint Danish-Swedish production.

“The real problem with Afghanistan was the decision to try to occupy the country, and to try to eradicate the Taliban, and transform it,” said Kenneth Pollack. “I think that we’ve learned that that was ultimately impossible.”
That was the lesson Vietnam was supposed to have taught us, but we never learned.

J. William Fulbright was a Democrat from Arkansas who chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for years and was an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War.
The biggest lesson I learned from Vietnam is not to trust our own government statements. I had no idea until then that you could not rely on them.
Another of his quotes I've always liked:
We have the power to do any damn fool thing we want to do, and we seem to do it about every 10 minutes.
