Ammo Inventory

1
Finally did an inventory of the ten different calibers of ammo. Since 2016 I've been randomly stocking up on ammo and had some gifted.

Three things come to mind;

I have a severe shortage of .380

I need an ammo safe

And if some people knew how much ammo I had it might make headlines and I might be called a crazy gun nut.

So how much ammo is considered over the top, 10K - 20K rounds? What would you say constitutes being a gun nut ammo and gun hoarder. I'd rather think of myself as a collector and survivalist.

You sir are not ready for a zombie attack!! LOL

OK, maybe I went overboard. Last year or so I've been frequenting a survivalist forum at gunboards.com. If you know whats good for ya's do go down that rabbit hole.

Next thing you know you'll be living out in the woods off grid with years supply of freeze dried food and water filters in a bunker.

If anyone sees a good deal on .380 let me know. :)

My own inventory is only two calibers (at least that I admit online), and relatively low in numbers, by many measures.

When I started buying last year (yes, relatively new to the "owner of pew-pew sticks" status), it seemed like three hundred rounds of 9mm Luger would be a lot. Then I took some instruction, to be sure I was doing the safety things right (I have some background in education, and am keenly aware of the Dunning-Kruger Effect), and went through about half the bullets in one session.

And the adage of there not being too many bullets reared its head.

I don't have tens of thousands of rounds. I do have a thousand or so in each safe spot, though.
Eventually I'll figure out this signature thing and decide what I want to put here.

A pallet of this, a pallet of that, pretty soon you have a truckload of ammo!

And a big ol' piece of land for the firing ranges! (yes, plural--pistol range, rifle range, longer rifle range, "fight house(s)," etc.

I bought some frangible ammo in my two main calibers recently, and took some to the range for some test-firing.

While there, had a chat with the RSO, who said one of their regulars said something about having fifteen THOUSAND rounds in one caliber.

Now, while I understand that "too much ammunition is an oxymoron" as noted by Wino, fifteen thousand seems a bit more than I'll need for a while.

I fully expect to sell off/trade out some of the M855 stuff I have over the coming months. Not all of it, mind you, but I don't feel a need for the current level of inventory when I can trade it for something more suitable to my purposes.

Hell, I'm building a private range then! I haven't been to a range in over a year and a half--and the window on going to an indoor range just closed again with Delta.

While we're dreaming, I need a range where you could set up a moving target thing. Like hooking up targets to a line and some pully's and have it roll across the berm.

I have about just over 1k in 9mm bullets and 10k in brass. Just over 5k in 40 bullets and maybe 6k in 40 brass. About 20k primers and maybe 5lbs of powder to feed the two of them.

Powder is my limitation on being able to load rifle cartridges and I've sold every pistol that needed a LPP.

Thats prolly as much as some small 3rd world country's military has. Definitely enough to feed a small skirmish. lol

I have a ton of 7.62x39 and nothing to shoot it in...so that's great planning on my part.

I recently noticed I'm a bit thin on 9mm, so I'll be fixing that soon. I'm always on the hunt for .45 Colt, .38/.357, and .455...Like to keep my favorite revolvers running.
Recently found 10,000 primers I didn't remember I had, so that's convenience. I may have to set my presses up again, it's been a while.

Still trying to find all the parts to the reloading machines to set things up though. In terms of loaded ammo I only have enough for one or two more matches.

Re: Ammo Inventory

I should prolly reload but I'm too lazy. Plus I have no where to do it that the wife would approve of. Need to clean out the tool shed.

My ammo count was over 7K. Lots of .22, then .556 - 30-06 with AP - .303 brit - 30-30 - 9mm - 12ga 00 buck- .380 (short on that) - .38/.357 and ummmm oh 25-06.
So I wouldn't know where to start reloading.

I have noticed fewer "whole mag dumps" at night around here. Being it's California, we have ten rounds--easy to count. But they only shoot like three rounds. Times are tough. :-)

Before all my health crap and the ammo gouging, in decent weather I'd go thru 1K/mo.

Now it's been over a year since popping a few.

This has led to stockpiling and suffering withdrawal symptoms.

38/357 is one of the easiest calibers to reload and great bang for your buck, pun intended. I can load 38spl at about 12cpr, though components are pricier now and that might be artificially low with my FIFO accounting. Regardless, it's a lot better than the 40+cpr I see advertised.

25-06 sounds like a caliber you have to reload. I'm not sure I've ever seen it on the shelves. My 358win is like that. Sometimes I see a dusty old box, but it's really better to roll your own.
