A classy move from a Republican

1
Gov. Spencer Cox of Utah, a Republican, is enthusiastically opening up his state to refugees fleeing Afghanistan, citing the state's origins as a safe haven for Mormons.

Other governors from both parties are steadily following suit in offering up their assistance with resettling the thousands of Afghans desperately seeking to flee the Taliban and start new lives in the US.

Utah, Cox wrote in a letter to President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has "a long history of welcoming refugees from around the world" and is "eager to continue that practice" with refugees from Afghanistan.

"Utah's history guides our approach to refugees," Cox said. "Our state was settled by refugees fleeing religious persecution 170 years ago. Their descendants have a deep understanding of the danger and pain caused by forced migration and appreciate the wonderful contributions of refugees in our communities."

Sorry if I seem a bit jaded, but I don't trust any right wing guv to do the correct thing unless he has a hidden agenda or it feathers his nest.

That's one way to look at it, and I had several cynical thoughts as well. And then I chose to see the positive...

A white religious zealot just asked a brown foreigner to come live in his state. Can't remember the last time I saw that.

True that! I'd trust Scientology more than a republican. But, I hate all religions and trust no right wingers - kinda keeps my knickers in a knot.

Cox isn't an Abbott or DeSantis or a Trumper. When he was running for governor he and his Democratic opponent held some very good debates. Cox is helping to push vaccination in Utah and even though the UT legislature prohibited mandating masks in schools, he's sending out N-95 type masks to any students who request them. He's not an anti-masker.

Mormons aren't then worst people in the world...

All that Greek Yogurt? Most of is made by Chobani. Hamdi Ulukaya, a Turkish Kurd, opened a plant in Twin Falls ID, only slightly less LDS than Rexburg.
(Idaho is second only the CA for dairy production)
Chobani's workforce is 30%(+/-) refugees, mostly muslim from Afghanistan, Syria, etc.
There were some issues w/ the locals at first, but The Church wrangled the malcontents and everyone is happy and making money.
The Church is very self aware and are very careful about the image(s) they project.

As my Magic Underwear wearing father would say, "Who cares what color they are, their money is green!"

I was raised LDS AND lived in SLC, but those events are unrelated

Mormons have historically been enthusiastically converting “heathens” to the faith all over the world. I trust they have their own agenda for any act of “charity” they bestow.

I'm pretty cynical about religion and expect that you're right. Still, so long as their bus is headed the same way as I want to go we can ride a ways together. In a better world we'd all do the right things for the right reasons. But in the world we have I'm just happy to see people do the rights no matter the motive.
