More Democratic voters favor socialism than capitalism in major shift: Poll

1
Democrats have grown considerably more accepting of socialism since the coronavirus pandemic began, according to a new poll.

A survey by Fox News conducted this week found that 59% of Democratic voters hold a favorable opinion of socialism, compared to 49% who said the same of capitalism. Furthermore, 44% of Democrats hold an unfavorable view of capitalism, compared to 31% who view socialism negatively.

The new results are a marked shift from February 2020, when 40% of Democratic voters said they held a favorable view of socialism, compared to half who said the same about capitalism.

‘DELICATE DANCE’: MANCHIN AND AOC HOLD THE KEYS ON INFRASTRUCTURE

Among Republicans, the difference in ideology was stark. Some 67% of GOP voters said they hold a favorable opinion of capitalism, and a mere 8% said they viewed socialism in a positive light.

The poll comes as the House has become imbued with a vocal contingent of socialists and those who support socialist priorities. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York was elected in 2018 after a shocking primary upset and has since championed policies such as "Medicare for All" and the Green New Deal.

Ocasio-Cortez and Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts made waves after entering office, with the self-proclaimed “Squad” having outsize influence within the party and attracting much media attention, at times to the chagrin of party leadership.

Reps. Jamaal Bowman of New York and Cori Bush of Missouri, both members of the Democratic Socialists of America, were sworn into Congress after last year’s election.

Republicans have seized on the growing appetite for further-left positions within the Democratic Party and have used it as a cudgel against Democrats more generally and to gin up support for the GOP through anti-socialist messaging.

I have a lot of questions...

I'm completely convinced that the VAST MAJORITY of American's don't know what the hell "socialism" is. I strongly doubt that a majority of people surveyed were voting in the positive for...Government ownership of all production...That is what socialism is...

I think people associate social programs with "socialism". I wish we used the term "Social Democrat" they way Europeans use it.

And ReThugs not only don't have a clue what Socialism is, they don't have a clue what Capitalism is, either.

Boy you said it...

But if we're being honest, I don't think Democrats know what socialism is. My son who is in university studying for a nuclear engineering degree (he's not dumb), told me he was pro-Socialism. When I asked him to describe what he meant...Turns out, he's pro-Social-Programs (Medical, Education, etc.), and didn't really have interest in government controlling production outside of some very specific items where we really need to remove the profit incentive (Military, police, fire, etc.)... That's more like what the Europeans call a "welfare state" or Social Democracy.

Every time the left uses the "S" word, I just cringe. Because after 75 years of a cold war against socialism, in a nation full of people who just can't comprehend ANY sense of nuance...I think it's bad, bordering on negligent marketing to push "socialism". Pretty much plays right into the Right's hands.

Yet, they're not Socialist either. There is TON's of private industry there.
Finland has a mix. Many large corporations have or had the state as a shareholder. It’s the model I prefer and Finns think of it as socialism and do I. Not pure but as a variant of their own. It’s certainly better than what we have, a corporate monopoly. In the Finnish model they don’t care if small corporations are private, only large ones had government as a shareholder.

I think what the survey shows is that an increasing section of democratic voters are ready for some socialism perhaps on the Northern European type models. I would remind some of you that y’all said it would never fly when bernie was a candidate. I beg to differ. This survey shows it just might have worked just as well as the corporatist that was chosen.

Fox News is wacky, but their political polling is generally solid. There are no links to this "poll" in those articles, so I don't know if it exists or is even valid. A polling interviewer just asks questions, they don't define terms. Sometimes a question will include a standard definition that they will read. Republicans are so well conditioned that their leaders yell "Democrats are socialists" and they salivate.

YouGov did a poll in 2019.

A survey by Fox News
consider the source.
Yeah, when I saw that, I totally suspected some manufactured analysis and whining about the new infrastructure bill and the upcoming reconciliation bill. Means very little, but it was designed to be shared and repeated so as to bolster the vapor that supports the current maga-red point of view.

Both parties want to label each other, Republicans label all Democrats as socialists and Democrats label all Republicans as Trumpers and both sides are wrong. The parties have ideological wings and represent different economic levels. The Democrats are exactly the party of the poor, it includes a lot of blue coast billionaires and millionaires and Republicans aren't aren't all wealthy elites, there are plenty of working class members of that party. Yes Tucker Carlson has an upper class background.

This is the USofA.

Design the model you want, create it, then market it.
If it falls along the lines of the Scandinavian Social Democracies, great! Just give it a catchy name and don't let the competitors re-brand it.
We have allowed the conservative PR narrative to dominate without using the same tools against them.

These days everything must be based on a business model, so if the left wants to really get moving, they need to hire (today's version of) the J. Walter Thompson Agency to sell them "The American Business and Development Model" (or something like that) that may include things like eliminating certain business taxes for companies that support necessary social programs (i.e., full medical insurance, paid leave, etc.). I feel most Americans really want a robust social safety net, decent education/jobs training, parks, highways and public institutions. It's just the the Con marketers have convinced the flyover states that all their hard-earned tax money is going to undeserving 'welfare queens' and illegals.

It's all about the labels.

Unfortunately, dealing with the Left is like herding cats, so getting any sort of standard policy document to market may be near impossible.
