long ago i read "zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance", sorry, don't remember what it was about, but i can't help but wonder if there's also a "zen and the art of motorcycle riding". many people i mention getting a bike to emphasize the risks, and i recall being somewhat "charged up" the morning i dropped my kawasaki, hurt my knee and pretty much quit riding. so it looks to me that there might be a mindset or mental state which would conduce to safer riding? i notice a lot of bikers (and muscle car peeps, too) are constantly revving their engines, and i wonder about their mental states, anger, impatience, in a hurry, can't get the damn thing to idle, something. i hear one now, vroom, vroom, vroo-vroo-vroom, and then winding it out going up the road. is there an attitude or mental state that will improve one's chances of living to the next intersection? om, mane, padme.. asking for a friend.

No. There is no mindset that can induce safe riding through an intersection with “cagers” potentially making left turns in front of us at the last minute.

There is only the right mindset to induce a nice ride: Attention. For as long as that ride lasts.

“Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.” A book that most riders have picked up at some point in their lives but few have actually finished. It is actually a novel and not an instruction manual, self-help book, or whatever. It is a work of fiction about a reflective American man who struggles with mental health and takes a cross-country motorcycle journey with his son on the back of his Honda along with a married couple on their BMW. Along the way he makes observations about American life, criticisms of the culture (of materialism), and wrestles with the “meaning of life”. But this is a story with an “unreliable narrator” as we slowly descend with him into madness (mental breakdown) and journey with him picking up the pieces again. Not an easy book to read if only because of the nature of the story deals with mental illness along with cultural imbalance (also bordering on madness).

The "Battery Tender" brand has failed me more times than I can count. I use the Sears automotive brand, and now the Duracell brand.

I don't know if there is a 12 amp-hour lithium battery.

Yeah, it's awful to sit on a beach when it's 80 or 90 degrees, in a palm tree's shade, with a soft breeze, and a rum'n'coke or an ice cold Bahamian beer in hand.
It's a tough job, but somebody's got to do it!

I'm thinking about buying a motorcycle, but I don't know which is better for the beginner

Have you taken a Motorcycle Safety Foundation riding course for beginners? You will get a better idea from the course on the type of motorcycle you should choose to begin with.

Absolutely! I took the experienced rider course after a bad fall in 2004. It was super-interesting and fun, and I learned a lot even though I had been riding since 1977.
I cannot tell what the "best bike" is for a beginner. Mine was a 250cc twin cylinder 2-stroke Suzuki. It was light, but had some guts.

I have a mod project. Waiting on two parts to finish the setup. I’m installing an aluminum fairing, but looks like even when I get it done or semi done won’t be going to test ride anytime soon. I thought about painting it, but might just polish it. It’s only an initial setup, need to adjust some items and nothing is tightened up fully.

It’s meant to look like the old classic racing type faring. It’s a pretty interesting setup. There’s a light weight steel bracket frame the hooks and bolts onto the existing motorcycle frame and then the aluminum fairing bolts onto that. It doesn’t require any modifications to the frame, but I do need a few miscellaneous items relocated and additional mods at the instrumentation panel to make it all work. Just received a mod to relocate the brake fluid reservoir and waiting on the instrumentation panel bracket. Since the fairing and lights are stable and fixed certain items on the handle bar and steering system needs to clear under the fairing framework. I’ve already relocated the rectifier regulator and the turn signal and the headlight. Turn signals required me to get a different bracket that I modified to work with the fairing frame. In these pictures you can see the regulator and new signal locations. I’ve done some design work to get the bracket and signals to be where I wanted and some electrical work to a few components.

Needless to say working with limited use of one of my arms is slowing me down a bit and it also means a test ride won’t be happening anytime soon, not for some months anyway. I’ll see how my therapy starts to work after the operation and the initial six week immobilization period is over.

The brushed aluminum looks great on that fairing.

The brushed isn’t that nice close up. It was meant if one was going to paint it. I’ll have to polish it a bit if I don’t paint.

I’ve gotten it to where it’s essentially together all main parts installed just needs tweaks. Everything now will have to wait until I recover from my surgery. New cockpit layout. Overall appearance now.
